HEAD TRIP
“Señorita Wisoff? Daydreaming again?”
“No, Señor Scott.” I snap my head to attention. A twitter travels around the classroom. My cheeks blaze with embarrassment. “I—I guess I dozed off.”
“Can you tell me which explorer landed in Cebu in 1521 and converted Rajah Humobon and his queen to Christianity?”
“Vasco de Gama?”
“Guess again. This explorer met his death soon after.”
“Pope John?”
“Where’s your homework, Señorita?”
Sweat trickling down my backbone, I open my notebook to a page of scrawled sentences. “I did my deberes gramáticas.”
Eyes aflame, my high school Spanish teacher rips out my paper and holds it aloft. “You see, class, what comes of not paying attention.”
Suddenly I’m up to my knees in Pacific Ocean, surrounded by angry natives wielding bamboo spears.
“Holy Magellan! What a nightmare!” Snapping open my eyes, I kick off the bedcovers. “What on earth can I write for Pegman?”
Haha. You can ALWAYS come up with a story. Sometimes it just takes a while. The dreams and nightmares though…….can go away. Good job.

Not just a well written tale Rochelle, also a curious coincidence. Earlier today I looked up the reason for the recurring dream about having failed to finish homework/prepare for a test etc. You probably won’t be surprised to hear that it’s supposed to suggest the dreamer is over-stretching her/himself. Just puttin’ it out there …

Dear JS,
First you made me laugh and then you made me think. Not that I’ve actually had this dream, of course. 😉 I really did stew about what to write for this challenge though. Thank you.

You’re welcome Rochelle. I’m afraid I have this type of dream all the time. What’s really depressing is that those of us who have it will apparently carrying on doing so no matter how old we get. I thought exam anxiety was for students, but it seems that’s not the case!

I do still have dreams about being in high school…whether it’s exam anxiety or not. I also have dreams about giving birth and I’m well past my childbearing years. I wonder what that means. 😉

As you’re a creative person, I’d guess those dreams are about turning your ideas into a story, drawing or something else to share with other people. At least getting older doesn’t take away the ability to imagine (or to dream).

Great take, Rochelle! Karen is having similar issues with this week. We’re distracted by vacation in Door County.

Thank you, Josh. I noticed that Karen is MIA. Vacations are usually when I’ll pull out a week of reruns in Friday Fictioneers. Enjoy your time.

Dear Rochelle,
I just loved this. It was so funny and well written.
I don’t have dreams about my school days, but I still occasionally have very weird anxiety ones about being late to work as a nurse, although it’s many years since I left nursing. More recently, they’re related to being late to a singing engagement or opening my mouth to sing and nothing coming out. Strangely, none of my anxiety dreams are related to writing, although now I’ve done my head in with two submissions in the last two days, each of them demanding for something complicated to go with the MS, I might have some anxiety dreams about publishers! Still, they were full MS submissions, so at least when they come back to me, it will be with a final yay or nay.
Yours is the only blog I’ve had time to visit today, so it was well worth it and means I’ve ended my working day with a big smile 🙂
All best wishes,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,
I still have an occasional dream where I’m at my first job at a Dairy Queen. Ages 14-16. I’m a looong way from those ages. 😉 Recently, Jan woke me up for a horrid nightmare because I was crying in my sleep. It was a weirdie where I received a phone call from my maternal grandfather–directly from the grave.
I understand your anxiety issues. As writers I think we’re constantly pushing forward and waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Thank you re my story. Glad to help end your day with a smile.

Rochelle

Dear Rochelle,
That does sound like the worst of nightmares. I bet you were grateful to Jan for waking you up. The trouble is, one can replay those sort of dreams in one’s mind for ages after.
All best wishes,
Sarah

Magnificent! Loved the twist of POV and it just kept getting funnier. Sounds a lot my recurring high school nightmares.

Dear Karen,
Isn’t it funny how those high school days stick with us? I still have dreams about being in class or working at Dairy Queen, my first job. Glad you enjoyed my head trip. 😉 Thank you.
