THE CHEESE STANDS ALONE

“A dip in Farmer Gayer’s pond would feel mighty nice.” Hot from hiking, Shelley pointed at the man in overalls a few feet away and whispered to Dale. “Old buzzard’s as mean as they come.”

Dale tilted her head. “Looks harmless enough to me. Nice hat, eh? Maybe you should draw a picture of him as a peace offering.”

“Nothing doing. The wannabe art critic turned up his nose at my Winky.” Shelley opened her drawing pad to a sketch of a fawn. “That Nasal Falls curmudgeon wouldn’t know true talent if it hit him in a speeding purple truck.”

  • Dear Rochelle,

I knew something would happen for me to actually post second! Who’d a thunk kids would wake me, dog would bug me so… of course I used the situation to my advantage…

As for this, how fun to “work” with you on this…

    Lotsa love,

    Dale

    • Dear Sandra,

There’s no doubt in my mind that Russell will be up for the challenge. Since his missus gave me express permission to use the photo and roast his…um…well you get it. 😉 I can only brace and prepare for the rebuttal. 😀 Thank you.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

  • “Turned up his nose at my Winky,” OK, it’s very early in the morning, and even though I know you meant something else, my mind in the gutter went somewhere else and made me snort laugh.

    Thanks

    • Dear Jilly,

Mr. Gayer has earned the “butt” position. 😉 Even Connie said so when she gave me permission to use the photo. As for Winky. Well I’m blushing. It really was the name of the deer in an magazine advert that said “Draw Winky.” Thank you for reading and making me laugh.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

  • Old man Gayer, a curmudgeon? Surely not? He’s just deep in thought – and his ditch! Though he must be a grump not to like your faun friend there 🙂 Sweet and fun tale, Rochelle – you made me smile

  • Dear Jacqueline Benny W(T)F,

Would you like some dip with your cheese & crackers? I’ve whipped some up especially for you and the Canuck. You won’t need your flippers in this pond, but you might want some nose plugs. 🙂 And remember, you can’t swim for an hour after eating.

    • Dear Liz,

The sketch is actually a week old. Back in the 60’s or 70’s there was a reoccurring advertisement in magazines for correspondence art courses. Above the little deer it said “Draw Winky.” The idea was that you drew the fawn and sent it to the address given to find out if you had artistic talent. Of course it’s all part of my Russell lampoon this week. 😉

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

  • First time seeing your prompt thingy and I think it’s fun! Took a stab at it and I hope I did the linking correctly–if not, will you be so kind to tell me? Thank you to “Inside the Mind of Isadora” for the idea!

  • Running late this week. Dealing with FB issues of not being able to access my page after the storm thursday. grrr….. anyway, I just had to write to this picture. Love your story, Rochelle… How often artists are overlooked in their youth….

    • Dear Magarisa,

The fawn is actually a copied sketch from an old advertisement for art correspondence school back in the 60’s. The caption read “Draw Winky.” The ad went on to tell the potential art student to send in their sketch so their experts could tell you if you had talent. 😉 At any rate, it has become a bit of an inside joke between Farmer Gayer and me so I had to render him in purple and post it. 😀 Thank you.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

    • Dear Karen,

I don’t think Farmer Gayer’s particularly violent. 😉 But you might have already figured out that he enjoys a good inside joke now and then. Seemed the right time. 😀

      Shalom,

      Rochelle
