A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in the comments.
Word Prompt
Thanks to Sammi Cox for the challenge. 😀
A little reminiscence .
My parents took me to Miami Beach the year I turned fourteen.
My first trip to the seashore.
However…
Puberty wreaked havoc
Hormones raged.
Everything was wrong. I didn’t have a Twiggy figure.
My hair required constant ironing.
Nonetheless…
The sea calmed me.
The ocean stretched before me.
I dipped my toe in the water.
As the future beckoned.
Nice Nostalgia

Dear Adele,
I’m not sure I’d call that photo ‘nice.’ My brother really took the picture to make me mad. At the time it worked. Now I look back on the time with fondness. Funny how time can change our perspectives. Thank you so much.

That kid does look like trouble. Today, she gets under about 100 people’s skin every Wednesday and makes them go to work.

You looked absolutely perfect and beautiful and proportional and teenageree …
So much teen angst over what later can be seen as just normal bodies undergoing normal changes … Change is hard, though, and early adolescence is the first time we face them not only inwardly, but outwardly. There is no way to hide that everything is CHANGING when everything does …
I’m sorry you were unhappy with your body (almost right of passage, this, sometimes) but I’m glad the sea calmed you.
It has always been my calibrator.
A lovely — even if somewhat sad in nostalgia — piece.
To your teen you — you were beautiful and vivacious and full of spunk, just as teens can and should be …

Na’ama Y’karah,
I wouldn’t be that age again for all the money in the world. Body image has been a tough thing for me most of my life, but particularly difficult then. Your comment brought a tear to my eye. Thank you so much.

Well, to be fair, I wouldn’t want to be that age again, ever, either. Life has only improved as far as I’m concerned, on many levels.
Yes, I think that body-image is tough for too many. So sad, and so much energy spent and angst experienced.
I like you just the way you are!

Dear Rochelle,
Another wonderful nostalgic piece. Fourteen is such an age, isn’t it? Nope, would not go back there! But so very glad you found the sea cathartic.
Shalom and lotsa love,

Dear Dale,
I’ve been a water baby most of my life. But the sea is something very special, isn’t it? Fourteen is not an age I ever want to repeat. Then being the mother of 14 year olds I realized I’d been blessed by NOT having a girl. 😉 Thank you.
Shalom and hugs,
Rochelle

There is that… having had boys meself and looking at friends and families with girls… I’m thinking of the two evils, boys are lesser – ish… 😉

I don’t recall ever seeing that picture but I do remember the girl. Lol. So, sticking your toe in the water caused all this swimming fascination you have? Small acts can have great consequences. Good nostalgia piece.

Dear Jan,
Actually my fascination with swimming goes back way further than that. I started swimming when I was 6 or 7. It’s always been my happy place. As for the photo, Jeff took it to make fun of me. Now I’m able to look at it in a different way. 😉
