BORROWED TIME

“You stole my art,” screamed Valerie. “You scum!”

The gun’s blast resounded in Andy’s ears.

Somewhere the Beatles sang, “We all live in a yellow submarine…”

Voices floated from the bedside television and pop art faces hovered around him.

Life mimics art.

“He had too much control over my life.” Valerie Solanas glared into the cameras.

Everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.

“Nine of Mr. Warhol’s organs were injured,” said Dr. Rossi. “Heart massage…”

Am I really alive?

Mama prayed, “Please save my son.”

I’m dead.

“Senator Robert Kennedy has been shot,” said the newscaster.

 Life is a dream.

  • I didn’t know Andy Warhol was shot so this was an informative piece. The staccato, fragmented delivery was perfect, representing the nightmare, feverish qualities of post-traumatic shock. Well done,Rochelle.

    • Dear Sandra,

Until I started following the research trail, I didn’t remember the shooting. But then two days later Robert Kennedy’s assassination took the media forefront. Thank you for your kind words re the story itself. It means a lot.

  • The style, disjointed, is to prose, as modern art is to what I consider “art”.
Is this saying Andy Warhol and Senator Kennedy were killed about the same time?

    • Dear Frances,

The style is disjointed because it’s supposed to be Andy’s thoughts as he’s drifting in and out of consciousness. He did survive the shooting while Senator Kennedy, shot two days later, did not. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, my friend.

  • Dear Rochelle,

I love how you did this! It’s how I imagine you have that whole “life flashing before your eyes” thing at a time like this. To think he survived that and died 15 years later… but because of it.

    Brava!

    Shalom and lotsa love,

    Dale

  • Love Warhol! When he died, I was in high school, and in tribute I made a larger than life paper mache monstrosity of a Minty green ice cream cone. It was disgusting and horrible… my art teacher loved it, and it won first place in that year’s art show. Warhol’s art is cool! I love to look at it. It’s just not my personal genre. The minty green icecream cone became a hood ornament for a parade float and then tossed on the trash heap where it belonged.

      • Dear Bear,

I would’ve though you’d have been in high school when he died in 1987. I was in junior high when he was shot in 1968. I think I’m older than you. 😉 No matter. I think you might be too hard on yourself on the minty green ice cream cone. It sounds like it was quite the hit. Thank you for reading and commenting. 😀

        Shalom,

        Rochelle

        • I was a Junior in High School in 1987. I had enough credits to graduate, but because of years of surgeries and shuttling from one foster to the other, I didn’t have enough time in a seat… so I had to stay a year with 8 studyhalls in a row… Thank the powers that be that let me cross the street to the college and take a few gen eds.

  • Your posts are often educational. A couple of weeks ago, inspired by your story, I read all about Alfalfa. When my roommate got home, “Did you know Alfalfa…?” “How do you know so much about Alfalfa?” This week it’s Warhol. Outside of the Campbell’s Soup painting, I didn’t know that much about him. Now, I know he has a really long Wikipedia page.

  • Interesting story~thanks for the history. Having just briefly read something about Valerie Solanas, I now know that she was an entitled radical hag, who considered men scum. Warhol was a confusing combination of hippie counter culture favorite and supposedly clean cut Catholic gentleman who accompanied his mother to Mass at St. Agnes’ Cathedral every day of the weak. Such a collection of characters could only have existed in the ’60’s~

  • Dear “Sparky” Alma Edison W(T)F,

Perhaps you’d better wear a kevlar vest at your next art show. I can just hear some crazed nut screaming, “Her paintings of wine glasses turned me into an alcoholic!”

Perhaps your name this week should have been Amy Winehol

    • Dear Chairman of the Bored,

I will take your suggestions into consideration. If my next show is anything like the last one, I’ll need more protection from wind and rain. Amy Winehol. I like it. A good vintage feel to it. 😉

  • The 60s seemed to be a time of assassinations or attempted assassinations of celebrities. We don’t have that anymore, but now we just have anonymous mass shootings. Interesting take on the prompt and I like your style of writing this one, mixing the quotes with the writing.

    • Dear David,

Sadly, I agree with you. Why do nutcases feel they have to take crowds with them when they commit suicide? It’s gotten to where a person’s afraid to turn on the news. Thank you re my story.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle
