WAKE-UP CALL
Bart slipped into the booth across from Marla. “That was some wedding yesterday.” He clutched the ring in his pocket waiting for the right moment.
She swished her luxurious hair over her toned shoulders. “Your sister and her groom make an odd couple.”
“They’re so in love. To think I set ‘em up for laughs—him being such a scrawny runt and her being—”
“Plump?”
“I’ve always teased her about it.” Bart hung his head.
“I so get it.” Marla giggled. “I’ll have a salad. How about you?”
Swallowing, he released the ring. “Y’know, I’ve suddenly lost my appetite.”
A trilogy! Brilliant, Rochelle

This more than makes up for any past writer’s block. Poor Bart. He finally found maturity but lost his love. I hope he affords Marla the same opportunity to find her maturity and acceptance before severing ties completely.

I did have a burst of verbiage this week. 😉 Perhaps Marla will eventually have her own wake-up call. Hard tellin’. Not knowin’. Thank you.

Dear “Kiss My Grits” W(T)F,
Salads aren’t cheap and depending upon what dressing you use can be as fattening as steak. Marla appears a little shallow. Bart better not dive into that pool. He might break his nose when he hits bottom.
A true woemance story,

Dear Bert Parks,
Indeed. A lot can go on a salad that renders it more fattening than spaghetti and meatballs with a side of garlic bread and spumoni for dessert. I think Marla’s depth is shallower than the kiddie pool. 😀

Sounds like Bart might have wised up given the events. Hopefully Marla will have that opportunity in the future. A well done trilogy, Rochelle!

At least Bart recognized what a shallow cad he’d been. Perhaps seeing his sister through the eyes of her beloved has made him rethink his attitude. Yep, he did dodge a bullet. Thank you times three, my friend.

Well, Bart is seriously rethinking his attitude. The idea of popping the question is now out of the question as he realizes what a jerk he’s been. 😉 Sorry, Marla.

Clearly i misunderstood your meaning, when you said “released the ring”. For some reason my mind interpreted it as presenting the ring to her, rather than letting go of it in his pocket. Perhaps Bart is going to turn out ok, after all. 😊

Perhaps I should’ve said ‘dropped’ the ring.

A great third part. There’s hope for Bart yet. Maybe because he saw how love can be, and now wants that kind of relationship as well? Marla isn’t it, at least not yet.

A good read Rochelle -I like your trilogy. One of my favourite bits is when Bart swallows hard with shame about his remark, and loses his appetite. Love the observation of this.

A significant third part to this story, Rochelle. If Marla is a model or wants to be one, she has less of a chance indulging in healthy eating unless she sees a change in the agencies’ attitudes. A change is beginning, but it’s moving slowly. —- Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,
I battled an eating disorder for significant portion of my life. One memorable friend in one of my support groups was a fashion model. She was an expert in the area of self-deprivation and the industry applauded her for it. Twiggy and Kate Moss did nothing for a young girl’s self image, did they?
Although my intent for Marla is that she’s self-centered and worships thin. I suspect she and Bart met at the gym. 😉 Thank you.

I remember reading Twiggy was so young her body hadn’t matured as yet. Older women were starving themselves trying to look like that. Later, she finally filled out a bit. I also read some high-fashion models were actually eating paper to stave off hunger pangs. How terrible. —- Suzanne

Not to mention Twiggy wasn’t all that happy with her skinny body. Nothing surprises me about what models will do to maintain their thinness. Very sad.
