SPAM JAM

Published December 8, 2019 by rochellewisoff

I’m reasonably certain I’m not the only blogger who takes issue with spam. If you’re a Word Press blogger like me, I strongly recommend a daily sweep of your spam folder. Akisment does a wonderful job of keeping these unrelated “comments” from showing up on my post, but there are days I find up to 20 of them in my spam folder. Not to mention that, on occasion, valid comments find their way there, too.

I seriously do not understand what spammers hope to accomplish by littering my posts with links to porn sites or lengthy paragraphs that make no sense whatsoever.

Here’s one from this morning:

Do I need to explain why I can’t read this? Oh wait, I can read “ero-videos” toward the bottom of the comment.

I do not like spam, Sam I Am. I do not like it with toast and jam. Wham, bang, no thank you, ma’am.

Here are a couple from this afternoon. (Yes, I checked it twice today…10 this morning and 7 this afternoon.)

It’s nice to know this person loves junk food. But I’ve no clue what this might have to do with  the post which featured a flash fiction about my brother’s difficulties with Latin in high school. CLICK HERE to read that story if you wish. 😉

My brother Jeffrey and his wife Debbie.

Then here’s this next little goody:

Of course I don’t read Russian either. Then I noticed the translate option at the top of the page.

Just what I want to see, right? NOT! Another thing I’ve noticed over the past few years of policing my spam folder is the majority of these annoyances show up on my November 26, 2016 post. I’ve never been able to figure the reasoning behind it, if there’s any reason to be had.

The post in question was a piece I did for Friday Fictioneers expounding on my great love for the color purple. CLICK HERE if you’d like to read.

For more on this nuisance, my fellow blogger, Dale Rogerson, shared some of her thoughts recently.

  • I’m glad you and Dale alerted me to this. I don’t think I’ve ever checked my spam folder! So I just did it and… nope, no valid comments, whew! But only 12 spam comments. You are clearly much more popular with the spammers than I am!

  • Dear Rochelle,

I am thrilled you have been inspired to do your own spam file post 😉 There is much amusement to be had, minus the annoying fact that they exist, of course.

    Shalom and Lotsa spam-less love,

  • Rochelle,

I had no idea Dr Seuss was such a horny bastard! But yanno . . there probably IS a market for that.

As for Spam, it’s the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? I go through my SPAM folder in such cursory fashion, because so little of it makes any sense. I’ve never gotten the junk food one, which you would THINK I would get. Nope.

And this isn’t mentioning those “bloggers” that aren’t really bloggers at all? Every once in a while I get a new ‘follower’ and when I go to their page, it’s like “Gotcha!” I hate when that happens.

Glad you decided to add one to the Spam Files, 😉

    Shalom,

    Marco

    • Dear Marco,

I’m tickled to outright hilarity that you caught the Dr. Suess mashup.

I generally don’t spend a lot of time pondering the spam-jam, but it seemed to be the right time to say something. Dale inspired me and I’m so glad she did. I’m sure we’re not the only two people who have the same thoughts.

Thank you for coming by and adding your most eloquent words.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

  • Clearly I’m doing something wrong. I burst out laughing with Joy’s comment to Dale. “Clearly you’ve mastered the secret of being Spam Bait” OMG I almost burst with laughter! I really ought to keep my mouth shut. Case my Spam Police open my door to spammers. I keep looking but no spam…a comment once in awhile but no spam. Now I’m in trouble for mentioning it…ACK! btw I love your T-shirt,

  • I just asked Wise Wiki why junk mail is named after canned spiced ham, and it goes back to a 1970’s TV sketch from Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Then I found a really interesting 2-minute video on how it came about on YouTube. Yet again I leave your blog wiser than when I arrived! It’s here –
    Why spam?

  • When I first started my blog a few years ago, I knew nothing about spam. I thought I would be notified whenever there was a comment (I’ve since figured out how to do that). Finally one day I went in to check for comments and was appalled — there were dozens of “comments” to one post and several others had quite a few. They weren’t suggestive or even off-color, just nonsensical, even if you allowed for translation. Most praised things that weren’t even mentioned in the post! The list was so long, I couldn’t be sure there wasn’t a legit comment way at the end. Finally I cleared them all out (by simply deleting “all comments”, as I remember) and haven’t been bothered since. Needless to say, I’ve been much more vigilant since then. However, I see that Akismet claims to have removed spam from my blog, to the tune of some 4,000 posts. I can’t figure out how to check these to make sure they are all really spam, the way I can with my email. Do you know how I could do that? I’d hate to miss a legitimate commenter because Akismet misinterpreted something.

    • Dear Genia,

I really don’t know how to check up on Akismet other than regularly checking my spam folder. Irony of ironies, I found your comment in my spam folder this morning!!! It pays to check. All I can say is we’re in this together. 😉 Thanks for reading and commenting.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

      • That’s hilarious! What is it about my comment that was considered spam? That answers why it seemed to take so long to be “moderated”. I did finally figure out how to access my spam folder this morning. I think. Truth is, I stumbled on it accidentally and I’m not sure how I got there. Obviously, I need to make checking it a more regular thing and not depend on Akismet’s judgement. Most of the ones I got hit with were click bait (I did test a couple — shudder). So unless it looks like someone I’ve been in touch with before, I don’t touch.
