BIVOUAC

Published December 9, 2019 by rochellewisoff

This week Pegman takes us to Saskatchewan Canada. You may use the photo provided with the prompt or take to Google maps and search within the borders of Saskatchewan for your own inspiration.

Your mission is to write up to 150 words inspired by the prompt. You may contribute poetry, prose, or essay. Once your piece is polished share with others at the link up below. Reading and commenting on others work is part of the fun.

Click frogs to enter the campground.

Thanks to Karen and Josh for hosting the challenge.

I chose this idyllic scene to revisit a flash fiction I wrote in July of 2012 when I was just one of the Friday Fictioneers gang. I added  50 words and a new title. Voila!

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Word Count: 150

BIVOUAC

           “I detest camping,” said Ella.

Following a full day of hiking, two miles past the nearest service station, Geoff’s classic mustang stalled. Neither of their cell phones found a signal and the sun was setting. Resentment swelled her. Pain riddled her back and thighs as they’d hauled their gear to a nearby vacant cabin.

“You told me you loved camping, El.”

             “I lied.”

He massaged her swollen feet. “Look at this magnificent view. Not to mention you’re in the company of your personal physician.”

How could she resist his brown-eyed, boyish pout?  That same look coaxed her into matrimony to the impoverished med student a year ago. “Yes, it’s beautiful. I only hope the folks who own this place don’t come and have us arrested.”

“At least we don’t have to pitch the tent. See? Our luck’s about to change.”

“More than you can imagine, doctor. My water just broke.”

  • Oh dear! I’m iffy on rustic camping as it is, but while nine months pregnant? That’s either incredibly foolish of her “doctor” to allow or… no, it’s just foolish. But then, if she wants to give birth ‘au naturel’ at least she has the right person with her! And that photo does make the location seem very welcoming and serene.

    • Dear Joy,

I wondered if this wouldn’t come up as it did the first time around. Nowhere did I say she’s nine months along. 😉 Admittedly not the smartest thing they’ve done. Perhaps there’s been a miscalculation as far a due date. At any rate, thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. It would be a beautiful place to give birth, wouldn’t it?

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

    • I love the cabin and the spot. Very peaceful and serene. As I helped deliver all three of my sons, as you remember, it doesn’t seem that far fetched. Especially as he was a med student. Their little vacation is ready to turn into a huge memory and momentous occasion. Good job Purple camper girl.

      • Dear Jan,

You were present at all three births and were a brilliant birth coach. I wonder what it would’ve been like in a camping setting. On the other hand, I do love camping, particularly when it’s coupled with canoeing. 😉 Thanks, m’luv..

  • Dear Rochelle,

Camping when pregnant was not my favourite adventure, I have to admit. It’s hard enough getting comfy in a real bed, never mind a pallet or a blow-up mattress! Her lack of stress at her water breaking does imply she is close enough to her due-date to not worry.
This will be a tale to share!
    Fun stuff, my friend.

Shalom and lotsa love without the drama,

    Dale

    • Dear Dale,

Her calm demeanor might be a smokescreen for her terror. 😉 I remember the only place I could get comfortable was in a swimming pool. No surprises, right? Thank you for the read and comment.

      Shalom and lotsa natural hugs,

  • Great to see you, Rochelle!

As idyllic as this spot looks, I don’t know if I’d want to have a baby there–even if my husband was a medical student.

But somehow, I think these two are up to it. If she’s still cracking jokes when her water breaks, nothing will phase her!

    • Dear Karen,

This is my second week in a row to show up for Pegman. Almost a habit. 😉

I’ve always found that cracking wise can ease a tense situation. (Or in some cases, make it worse). Something tells me this couple is going to be fine and have a great story to tell their kids and grandkids. Thank you.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle
