A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to Sammi’s Comment Section.
As always with this prompt, I wrote the first thing that popped into my head.
When I first began my writer’s journey, someone told me the characters write themselves. I gaffed it off as existential hogwash and hooey until Nikolai Derevenko, intended sidekick, evolved into the most complex character in my trilogy without asking my permission.

Love it. But honestly, many of your characters do not ask your permission. They just jump right in there and do darn well what they please. Lol. I love it because you never know who may or may not make it whether or not you love them or hate them. They sometimes just won’t let YOU insert your authority over them. Right…..?

You’ve learned well, Padewon. It is not for me to question. Only do. 😉

HA! And don’t they ever!
Yep, I can attest that happens. Totally.

Na’ama Y’karah,
At least it doesn’t take me by surprise quite as much. Still does…;)

Oh, it still manages to take me by surprise, though for the most part I just try to lend my typing fingers and hang on for the ride … 😉 XO

I guess what I mean is that it still takes me by surprise but I’ve learned to expect it. A bit of an oxymoron there, eh? 😀

Yep! Just like writing ones own books… 😉 (I’m sure the spirits of characters of stories past and those of stories yet to come think us hilarious…) 😉

I sometimes hold back on what I write about my dodgy characters just incase I give away something they’d rather be kept under wraps! Rosey was delighted you dropped by her blog!!!! Thanks Rochelle!

Dear Keith,
I write what the voices tell me to and no one gets hurt…well that’s not true either. Some characters do get hurt. 😉 Rosey is very welcome.

Dear Rochelle,
Wonderful take on the prompt. I love it when a character asserts themselves… I’ve only ever written short stories but it has happened to me, too! (So I understand 😉 )
Shalom and lotsa love,

Dear Dale,
As we speak I’m listening to new characters. Although they’re based on actual folks, they’re taking on new lives of their own. I think every true writer understands. It’s how our peeps become three dimensional, isn’t it? Thank you.
Shalom and lotsa true to life hugs,
Rochelle

I never dared to include myself in the writer category until rather recently. So yes, it is indeed!

Yes, this matter of assertive characters has made my simple writing exercises more complex. It’s easiest if I just do as I’m told.

Dear D,
I love how you used the prompt work in your comment. It’s hard to explain to the phenomena to a non-writer, but it’s the truth. Thank you for coming by.
Shalom,
Rochelle
