A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.
LIMPID
The phone chimes at midnight, rousting me from sweet dreams.
I shut my eyes.
At once, my mind explodes into overdrive.
My eyelids snap open.
The coming day’s events loom large.
Sometimes I want to be lucid.
This isn’t one of those times.
So sorry about the phone chimes. Lucid is as lucid does. Lol. Welcome to me world. Nice little “non fiction” piece.

Dear Jan,
Not my first go round with insomnia. Stupid, not smart phone. 😉

Oh, for the phone jolting out of sleep. Sometimes it is indeed very hard to ‘down regulate’ again. I don’t like it when it happens, though I have to admit there were time when it led to productive hours in unexpected directions (with a cost, no doubt, the next day).
Here’s to being limpid when it suits us! 🙂

Na’ama Y’karah,
I, too have had productive times when wakened unexpectedly. The operative is “when it suits us.” 😀 I couldn’t help but go there with the word prompt this morning, since I write of just last night. 😉 Thank you for coming by. Turn out the light on your way out.
Shalom and zzzzz,
Rochelle

I’ve noticed, growing older, how much of the conversation between hub and I are about sleep… how remarkable and wonderful anything more than two hours straight is… in that way I relate to parents of newborns… and wonder what these sleepless nights might bear.

Dear D,
Amazing isn’t it? My hubby and I find ourselves discussing sleep and the lack thereof. However there are no squalling babies in the night. Been there, done that and don’t wish to repeat it. 😉 Thank you.

Dear Rochelle,
There is nothing worse than being awakened by a ping from a phone we forgot to put on mute!
And, pray tell, why does the most annoying song start to play immediately in a loop, mixed in with all the other stuff making that hamster wheel turn? I have been suffering from insomnia for the past week. It’s been hell.
all that to say, excellent job on the prompt. I shall think about my own for tomorrow… maybe.
Shalome and lotsa sleepy love,
Dale

Dear Dale,
Hopefully that certain someone will turn off his phone tonight. At least I didn’t have a song going through my head but I certainly had some unkind thoughts and imaginings. 😉 At the very least, when I saw Sammi’s word of the week, I knew just what to do with it. 😉
Shalom and lotsa nighty-night hugs,
Rochelle

Just when we want our brains to be fully there, they just refuse to cooperate

I write some of my least expected stuff in these situations.
But how come our brains are out of our control?
Who’s in charge here, huh?
Your expertly crafted piece raises more questions than answers, but it is good to know, m’lady, that we all suffer from this too-frequent take-over of our thought processes.

Dear CE,
Sometimes all we have are the questions, no? It seems that once my eyes are open, I’m officially awake, much to my own chagrin. Thank you.

You’ve highlighted one of my pet hates and something that happens too often. I just accept that sleep-times over, climb out of bed and write a story!.

Dear Keith,
My average wake up time for me is 0400. Midnight’s too extreme….even for me. 😉 I think we’ve all been there, though. Thank you.

I get more of the feeling listening to you read the poem than reading it. Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback, Frank. Recently, at the urging of a visually challenged friend, I decided to record my pieces. Good practice. I’m pleased to know it works. 😀

I recall a blogger in the past doing recordings … and I always listened because a voice can emphasize the intent.

Very nice, Rochelle.
Except, of course, the truth is we want to sleep.

Dear Bill,
There’s a time to be lucid and awake and then there are times to slumber. And never the twain should meet. 😉 Thank you.

Hey Rochelle,
There are names for the times between being awake and falling to sleep, and for being asleep and transitioning to awake.
Still, great words. 🙂
