AGENT 3844

Heart pounding, Virginia Hall caught her breath and massaged her aching hip. “That was a close call. Cuthbert, you’re always causing trouble.”

“You’ve named your wooden leg?” Virginia’s fellow agent, Armand, found a table in a darkened tavern. “Here. Rest fast.”

She forced a smile. “I was sure the Gestapo recognized me from the poster.”

“The artist certainly captured your likeness. But your disguise is good.”

“Perhaps not good enough.”

The tavern keeper brought two glasses of wine.

“It is my honor to serve with you.” Armand raised his glass. “To the lady who limps. Most dangerous of Allied spies.”

  • She wore a bracelet of live snakes 🐍 to school? I wouldn’t touch her with a six-foot Cuthbert.

She was a total bad-ass, but her story kind of reads like a “Spies Like Us.” She went from shooting herself in the foot, resulting in her losing her leg, to super spy. That’s quite the story arc.

  • Love it! I just happened to read a long article about Virginia Hall. Quite the amazing lady, one of the best American spies ever, and she did it while missing one leg. At one point, she radioed into HQ that “Cuthbert” was giving her troubles. Not knowing who Cuthbert was (her wooden leg), HQ informed her to terminate him without hesitation. Oops. I really enjoyed this one, Rochelle.

  • Dear Rochelle,

How glad am I that you were inspired to write about Virginia and Cuthbert. Yet another wonderful woman brought to light thanks to your more than adept way with the historical story!

    Shalom and lotsa courageous love,

  • Very interesting bit of history, there. Unknown to me. Enjoyed learning about it, and nice to know that even us “crips” can serve our country well. Have a great week, Rochelle. Shalom, Bear

  • Rochelle, What a fantastic story about Virginia Hall. I recently watched a movie about her, and all she and the women spies experienced in their fight to squash the Nazi regime. I so enjoy your historical figures and often choose to write about some myself. Always fascinating.
