A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s comment section.
Over the past year and a half I’ve carefully avoided the C word or any issues surrounding it. There are plenty of rants, whines and opinions raging without adding my own. However this week’s word (after looking it up) elicited my unavoidable response. Seriously I do enjoy social interaction to a degree, but find a lot of it exhausting. Thanks for adding to my vocabulary, Sammi. It actually does describe me to a degree.
WHAT’S A FOURTEEN-LETTER WORD FOR INTROVERT?
When asked in a Zoom interview if quarantine had adversely affected me, I carefully considered my reply.
“In all honesty, my life hasn’t changed much.” I grinned at the young man on my screen. “I paint. I write.”
“Is there any social activity denied you that you really miss?”
I thought about my morning walk to the shut-down fitness center to gaze longingly at the empty pool. “Now that you mention it—swimming laps. Not very social, huh?”
“Do you consider yourself antisocial?”
“I prefer to call myself a solitudinarian.”
Disclaimer: The preceding conversation doesn’t actually appear in the video. 😉
Having just watched the interview, I’d call you inspirational Rochelle!

Aw. thanks, Keith. And thank you for taking the time to watch. I think we actually recorded the interview in March and then it aired in June.

Dear Rochelle,
I think the term solitudinarian has a much better ring to it (even if WP doesn’t recognize it!) And I think during the past year and almost half, a lot of people have realised they are more so than they thought, while others had it confirmed that they are so NOT.
Shalom and lotsa friendly from afar love,
Dale

Dear Dale,
The word does have more elegance than recluse or hermit, doesn’t it? 😉 I think I’ve come to realize just how much I enjoy my own company….most of the time. Although I’d love to meet some of my virtual friends in the flesh one day. Thank you.
Shalom and lotsa long-distance hugs,
Rochelle

What a great story. If anyone can be busy as a shut in, it’s you. You certainly are not reliant on other outside activities to round out your days. Good job.

This from the man who says I could live upstairs and never come down if I had a kitchen up here. 😉 Could I? Thanks for your understanding and support, m’luv. ❤

Solitudarian sounds like something we should wear as a badge of honour in the connected, hectic world of today. Solitude doesn’t equal lonely, or in your case unproductive 🙂

Dear Iain,
I rather like the word. Sounds much more noble than recluse, doesn’t it? Thank you for your kind words.

These times have been congruent for some, at least in some aspects of them, and that is absolutely fine, IMO!

Na’ama Y’karah,
As I told Dale, I rather relish my own company. 😉 At least I wasn’t scratching at my door during lockdown begging to get out. Thank you for your affirming words.

Rochelle

🙂 I think more of us than some think were wholly or partially okay with the social allowances for less social allowance … 😉

Dear Dee,
What can I say, I’m just a cockeyed introvert. 😉 Thank you. I’ll saunter by the Saddle up Saloon soon. Many thanks again.

Considering I’ve always been a smidge of a recluse anyway, and I’ve never been the least bit concerned about the effects this pandemic may have upon me, I don’t even notice it very much. I so wish I could swim~

Dear Larry,
I haven’t been cowering in fear either. Nor can I say I suffered much trauma…aside from chlorine deprivation. 😉 Thank you.
