A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.
WHAT IS MOTHERHOOD MADE OF?
At twenty I had the requisite for motherhood—a husband and a womb. I danced for joy when the tests came back positive.
However, after Daniel’s birth, I resented him. I wanted sugar and spice. Instead, I got snips and snails.
One night, after putting the baby to bed, I turned on the television to an ad for flame retardant pajamas. Images of once handsome children, burned and scarred beyond recognition riddled me with guilt.
I bolted from the sofa to the nursery, gathered Daniel into my arms, inhaled his sweetness and whispered, “I love puppy dog tails.”
Dear Rochelle,
There are things we can never learn from books and nursery rhymes. We think we know what we want because we have created images in our minds. Girls vs boys, bows vs snails, loud screaming vs shouts of triumph…
I thought I wanted little girls, too… I got my fill of braiding hair and other girlie things with my nieces… and you ended up with granddaughters so, funny how that works!
Shalom and lotsa love,
Dale

Dear Dale,
In retrospect, I believer there was some divine wisdom involved in not granting me girls. Estrogen and creativity are a volatile mix. Raising three creative men I can only imagine…happy with what I have. One of each. 😉
Thank you for chiming in. I know you completely understand where I’m coming from.
Shalom and lotsa hugs,
Rochelle

All I need to do to be thankful I had boys is sit in my backyard and year the squeals and outright screams from all the little girls next door… and two doors over – coz yeah, I hear them, too.

Little girls do have squeals that go to the top of the pain chart, don’t they?

A great little fiction? story. I often went to their bedroom just to look at the little miracles the was placed in our charge. A little bit you, a little bit me. Good job.

I guess we all needed a reminder now and again about how blessed we were, and how special they were.

There are the requisites and then there is the reality of what is actually required …
Well done, you!

Na’ama Y’karah,
The reality of what’s actually required is still setting in. 😉 Thank you, my friend. 😀

It is a long-term, manual-not-included, variations-expected kind of requirement … 🙂
