THE FINAL FRONTIER

“History in the making.” Keela’s upturned eyes glittered in the starlight. “Can you believe they’ve actually sent an astronaut to the moon?”

Jono ached with love for her and their unborn child. “Maybe one day he’ll go camping like this with his offspring. Only on some distant world.”

“Do you suppose there’s life on other planets?”

            “Doubt it.”

She pressed one hand against her stomach, seized his wrist with the other and gasped. “It’s time. Listen.”

A crunching sound followed by a high-pitched shriek emanated from inside the tent.

            Jono’s hearts leaped.

Keela’s antennae quivered. “Our hatchling’s here at last.”

  • Ha! Could be historical fiction, Rochelle, you never know! What a fun story this week – you had me there until right at the end. Lovely stuff and very topical. Did you get to see the eclipse where you are? Off to scribble mine now

  • A lovely story, with a great sting in the tail, and a message that’s particularly appropriate in these times.Yes, we do all share more than divides us (except of course for all those silicon-based life forms who are pure evil)

  • Great twist there. Thanks for using my photo from Sturgis campgroud. I didn’t see those characters though. Probably a good thing. Lol. However, I did see some that may have been from another planet. Well done.

    • Dear James,

I wasn’t really thinking spiders with the crunching. Just imagining the sound of the hatchling eating his way out of the egg. Definitely different astronaut and different moon. I was going to make it moons plural but it was too early to give it away. Loved your historical fiction btw. Thank you.

  • Dear Rochelle,

Absolutely loved this. How you can go from such serious historical stories to this light-hearted (make that two or more…) tale proves that you are a fabulous writer. Love the new intro boxes too (maybe some will take the hint 😉 )

Off to write mine now… Hmmm where will MY muse take me?

    Lotsa love,

    Dale

    • Dear Dale,

You’re such a sweetheart and all round good friend. As for the new boxes…pfft. I’m not holding my breath. 😉

Thank you for the lovely comments/compliments. Every once in a while it feels good to stretch my antennae.

    • Dear Eric,

I think I’ve Scified it less than five times in the five years I’ve been leading this herd of cats. It only happens on rare occasions when the muse beams down and inspires. Ironically, I’ve always loved SciFi…particularly Star Trek…and Babylon 5 and and…
Happy to have caught you off guard. 😉 Thank you.

    • Dear Björn,

I didn’t picture these beings as having tentacles. I saw them as somewhat humanoid with a few …er…differences. 😉 Yeah…alternative historical fiction…that works. 😀 Thank you.

    • Dear Penny,

I have to wonder and question the same things. We always depict aliens as little green men. What if they’re not? I guess that’s why I love Star Trek so much. 😉 Thank you.

  • Haha, it’s historical fiction but not as we know it, not as we know it, Captain.
    Beam me up, Scotty!

Like the antennae in cheek tone of this story, Rochelle. And they way they cannot believe what we have achieved.

The dialogue as usual is exemplary.

And never a word wasted, every one earns its place.

  • Dear Cateye Aggie,

You shot a hole in one with this story. The search for intelligent life is a whole nother story. I enjoyed your presentation Saturday, I think it was a YUGE hit. Now, excuse me while I get back to MeTube on my new ?FoneIX.
