In 1953 Gasoline (Petrol to our folks in the UK) was 20 cents a gallon. You could mail a letter for 3 cents and go to the movies for 70 cents. And the list goes on. A few influential people were born that year, including Tony Blair, John Malkovich, Mary Steenburgen and Yours Truly. 😉 September 4 is the actual day which I do share with Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. of Welcome Back Kotter fame.
AGING IS ANOTHER WORD FOR LIVING
“Seventy,” I say, trying to wrap my head around it. “Seventy? Really?”
“Careful,” says Dale with a twinkle in her eye. “A lady never tells her age.”
“Why?”
“Dunno. It’s just a saying, like ‘lightning never strikes twice.’”
I once wrote a flash about swimmer Maurine Kornfeld or “Mighty Mo” who’s still breaking records at one-hundred-and-one.
Last week my ninety-year-old friend Ernie shared his lap lane with me.
“Big plans for your day?” asks Dale.
“Yep. I’m going to start my day by swimming my usual two miles while I ponder what I want to be when I grow up.
*Three years ago I wrote about Mighty Mo. CLICK here to read about this amazing lady.

Yes, age is just a number. Let’s stop counting and instead enjoy every day of life.

Dear Rochelle,
Age is what you make of it. Hiding it doesn’t change where the number sits in the calendar of your life so you might as well embrace it, I say! ‘Sides, you look mahvellous, dahling!
Shalom and lotsa years of love,

Dear Dale,
Two things I’ve never understood: lying about your age or your shoe size. (I might fudge on weight 😉 )
Thank you for the wondeful photo. (I made you play! I made you play!) One of these days I hope we have that fictional in person conversation and real hugs. Meanwhile face to face online is the next best thing. Nu?
Thanks also for the kind words.
Shalom and lotsa promised in person hugs,
Rochelle

The lying about age is ridiculous. Then again, in today’s society of always trying to look younger than…. as to shoe size – I’m still grasping with the fact my feet have gotten bigger? What up with that?
Hopefully one day it will happen. 🙂

My feet have gotten wider over the years but no longer. they’re long enough. Rather large for my height. But, hey, they work and get me where I want to go. Perhaps they help me swim better. 😉 (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)

It’s crazy. I was a size 8.5-9 and now I’m a 10! Da hell? My arches have lost much of their arch, sadly… and LOL. I hear ya!

Happy birthday! I’m assuming it is sometime around now… Don’t know much about ’53, but ask me about ’63 😉 Keep swimming along. (For some reason I thought of a Frank Sinatra song…)

Dear Trent,
What’s ten years between us? A few television seasons apart. 😉 September 4 is the exact date. Not to early to start celebrating. 😀 No plans here to stop swimming. I have to keep up with Ernie and Mighty Mo. Thank you.

Ah, a Halloween baby. 😉 I’ve kind of been getting used to the number the whole year as I watch my classmates succumbing. It does beat the alternative.

All I can say is, that time goes by whether we allow it or not, buy growing up – on all its separate aspects – is totally optional. On my end, I figure that as I’ve never been the age I’m now, I don’t have a clue as to how I am supposed to feel or be at this age, so I’m just doing whatever I want, because that’s what I know to do … 😉 So, you do you! 🙂

Querida Tracey,
Swimming a mile most days is nothing to look down on. I don’t see myself going beyond 2 miles, 3550 yards, 71 laps. It takes a little over an hour and a half. 😉 Now, with my elliptical trainer out of commission, I need to find a good weight bearing routine. I don’t like the gym and the weather here isn’t always conducive to walking. I’ve found some work out videos on You Tube I’m going to give a try.
Oh sorry. I didn’t mean to dump another 100 words on you. I’ll say thank you now and move on.
Shalom y abrazos,

I’ve read that all strength training builds bone and doing several jumping jacks or stomping dance moves every day will also stimulate bone growth.

Age is a mentality. Your friends, all of them, seem to not have this mentality.

Happy birthday, Rochelle. There’s nothing we can do about ageing, so we might as well make the most of it. You’re certainly doing that, and as others above have said, you are an inspiration.

Querida Rochelle,
The numbers don’t matter much after a certain age. I think it’s best to
focus on good health and super fun living. Keep up the swimming, it’s what
the doctors advocate here in sunny paradise ( mmmm … not so much lately
with hurricanes). Birthday’s sure make us think … pues que se puede hater?
Solamente vivir y vivr con salud y alegría. XOXOXO
