Here it is! The official cover of LAST DANCE WITH ANNIE, due out sometime in May or June. The poem in the following story is the beginning of the book and one that I actually wrote when I was in the midst of the battle.

Genre: Non-Fiction
Word Count: 100

HIS SUCCESS STORY

The Dancer

The steps used to

Be simple,

Every leap and turn;

Graceful, exultant dance.

But now

Annie leads me to murky depths

Of despair

And

Threatens,

In the most literal sense,

To devour

Soul, spirit, and body.

I’m tortured by

Pain on the faces of those

Who care.

Helpless to halt this

Insane choreography

I seek resolution

Via self-destruction.

After reading my poem, Wayne asked, “What do you hope to accomplish by starving yourself to death?”

“They’ll be better off without me.”

*****

In Memory of Wayne Clinton Witcher, my ever-patient therapist. I will always consider myself your success story.

  • Dear Rochelle,

Such an important subject to share. This poem is a perfect representation of the battle you share in your book.

Yay! Can’t wait for my hard copy!

Shalom and lotsa dancing to the music sans Annie,

    Dale

    • Dear Dale,

Y’know I recently read through a few other poems I wrote during that time. It really hurt to read them. I’m so not there anymore. But they bring back those feelings hot and heavy. Not to mention I remember those kinds of sessions with Wayne. I really wish he was here to share the book.

Thanks, my friend for being a beta reader.

Shalom and lotsa happy dancing with hugs,

      Rochelle

  • I can’t find the words to express how much courage I see in you talking and writing about this from ‘the other side’. You are Wayne’s success story, but you are also your own.

This poem shows such self-awareness, even at the time, of the contradictions of the condition.

  • Congratulations on the book being ready for publishing. I plan on reading it but need to be careful it doesn’t trigger anything when I do. Wayne was your “angel with skin” helping you through. I’m sure he’s still helping, wherever he is now.

  • I am so glad you came out on the good side of possibilities on this “dance”. As I look forward to the book release, I am also somewhat apprehensive due to the feelings that will, I’m sure, be released with its reading. I am sure that many need to read this and realize that you can overcome this terrible affliction.

    • Dear Anonymous Jan,

I pray, too that the reading won’t be painful. We are no longer there…either of us. This book, although fictitious, is our shared journey/victory. I hope, too, that others will be helped and encouraged. Thank you, m’luv.

  • Congratulations on your book, Rochelle. What an incredibly difficult and important topic, one I’m sure you addressed with great care and gentleness.

A poignant tribute to your friend and mentor, Wayne. May he now rest easy.

    Elegant writing, as always, Rochelle.

    Peace

  • There’s a lot of power in those words and a lot of strength in not only the writing of them but the sharing. Hat’s off to both you and Wayne for that. And yasher koach on the final cover and the book release and here’s to much success! I like the bird clock in Wayne’s picture (I used to have one of those)!

    • Dear Michael,

Such a wonderful comment. Thank you. Wayne never gave up on me, nor did he criticize me. There were sessions where he allowed me to say nothing, or turn off the lights and sit on the floor.

I didn’t even notice the bird clock until you mentioned it. My husband has a Harley clock that has a different motor sound for each hour.

      Thanks again and shalom,

      Rochelle

  • The poem shows her struggle so well. How blessed she was to have had a therapist who helped her to win through. Congratulations on the coming book publication. Lovely tribute to Wayne. I’m sure he would have rejoiced with you as the book is released.

    • Dear David,

I’m happy to say that those horrid days are behind me. It is my hope that others will find their own experience, strength and hope through reading. At least, a step toward it. Thank you for your encouraging words. Hope all is well on your end.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

  • Speaking as a dancer… is something that I cannot do, so I’ll stick to the text. What a brilliant way to open your book! The reader is thrust right into the world with the dancing metaphor, the protagonist’s torment, and feeling of helplessness. Well done and the best of luck come May or June.

  • Hi Rochelle, Congratulations on your book. The poem got me reading the blurb of the book. It’s very brave of you to share your story and I’m sure it’ll help those going through it and others in understanding the issue.

    • Dear Smitha,

There are some things in the book making me feel a bit on the vulnerable side. 😉 I hope it does help someone else in their recovery. Thank you so much for your encouraging words.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle
