AS THE OLD SAYING GOES
“Ever stop to think about old sayings?” asked Brittany. “Like what do they really mean?”
“Who cares?’ Todd braced himself for one of his sister’s tangents. “It’s no skin off my nose.”
“Aha! You just used one. Or what about by the skin of our teeth. Where’d that come from? Since when do teeth have skin?”
Todd rolled his eyes. “Whatever.”
“Being your sister is no picnic.”
“That could be taken as a compliment.”
She frowned. “What?”
“The last time we went on a picnic, we were plagued by flies and ants. In other words, flattery will get you everywhere.”

Haha! Good one.

we all go through life speaking phrases that we have no idea where, or why, the source. They become so common that we speak without thinking….not always a good thing. lol. Good story.

Sounds like the boy is a glass half full kinda guy, but I agree, the etymology of phrases is fascinating. Funny how my story is about that too, but in a different way.
Lovely slice of life!

Dear Jen,
Language is fascinating, isn’t it? I can’t imagine trying to learn English if I didn’t already speak it. Then, other languages have their own idioms. 😉 Thank you.

Rochelle, I didn’t “get” the punchline, but I did enjoy the bantering between the siblings. I have a book of Chinese idioms and those are quite interesting. Every culture has them and each culture’s is different.

Flies and Ants – yes so annoying. It seems to me, that brother and sister are trying very hard to maintain a conversation, and would rather be elsewhere.
Along the River Stour in Dorset (UK) lives a Fly, and it’s bite can cause serious illness. A place to avoid for picnics.
In Scotland, we encounter the ever present hoards of blood sucking midges (a very small fly) which also enjoy people who picnic.

The idioms just roll off his tongue, but I did like the way he twisted the meaning of that last one. Picnics! I’m with Todd. I hate them with a vengeance. Clever story, as well as cute. Double success. 😊
