CONNECTING FLIGHT
“Are you ready to go to the airport?”
I shuffled through the piles on my desk. “Daddy, I can’t find my passport.”
“Hurry!” He paced the floor.
Then I remembered I only needed my real I.D.
When we arrived at the check-in, panic set in. I’d forgotten to pack. We rushed home where I flung clothes into my purple suitcase: black swimsuits, black skirt, black pants, black…What’s with all this black?
Next-thing-I-know I’m lying in bed. I open my eyes. Somewhat relieved, I look at the clock. It’s 04:00. Dad’s been gone these past thirty years. Gee, I miss him.
*I wrote this shortly after I woke up from this very dream. Wasn’t sure what to call the genre. 😉

And just a little something extra. 😉 It’s kind of long and has nothing to do with Friday Fictioneers. It’s an interview I did a few months ago with my author friend Diane Yates.

Rochelle,
Sorry, but your e-mail was blank. I have not received the expected Friday Fictioneers’ prompt.

Very strange. I’m sorry about that. However, that’s something I have no control over. As you’re here now, you can see the prompt, right? I wonder if that happened to others as well. Just one more glitch in the world of Word Press.

The other night, one of my dreams involved a secret base in the Colorado Rockies, armed fortresses, secret conspiracies and trying to escape in a rocket.

Dear James,
Wow. That’s quite a dream. It’s funny where our subconscious goes when we sleep. Glad you got the gist of my story. It’s a dream. Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. Slow start this morning.

It always freaks me out a little when I dream about someone who is dead, especially when, while in the dream, I realize that.

I’m going to choose to believe life gave you a few extra moments with Dad when you needed them, Rochelle. Dreams are certainly a mystery, but I like to try to embrace their gifts.

I love those type of dreams, especially if my dad is along for the ride. Seriously, who hasn’t forgotten to pack before a trip? Anyone? Ha ha

Dear Tracey,
Last summer, my luggage didn’t make it to Wilmington with me. Fortunately it showed up the next day. Long story. Every have one of those trips where anything that could go wrong did? 😉
It was bittersweet to wake up from this one. Thank you.

I really like your story, Rochelle. I haven’t dreamt about my mom in a long time. I wish she’d stop by.

Dear A.M.
Yeah, I haven’t dreamt of my mom for a while either. I miss both of my parents. They’ve been gone a long time, but, at my age I still feel like an orphan. Thank you for you kind comments.

this reminds me of a dream i had. my mom and i got off the bus and headed to the transfer station. on the way, she dropped her sweater. when i went back to pick it up, she was gone. i wonder if it has something to do with when she passed away and i wasn’t able to go home in time to attend her funeral.

It’s really hard to say where dreams come from. So sorry about your mom. Hugs to you.

Oh this was beautiful and sometimes dreams are so real and you let us feel that. I once dreamed of my bf in high school and in the morning I had felt like I had really visited with her. My heart was so full…. and is this maybe just under the “real-life” fiction genre? hmmm

Dear Yvette,
“Real-Life Fiction”. I like that. I still have dreams of working at Dairy Queen…my first job and have had quite a few of my last job. Those I wake up from with a huge sense of relief. I retired ten years ago and still…
Thank you so much for your comments.

Dear Dale,
I’ve no idea why everything I threw in my suitcase was black. But dreams rarely make a lot of sense, do they? I definitely miss my daddy.
Thanks for watching the interview. I haven’t been able to sit and watch the whole thing. I hear all the ums and ers. 😉
Shalom and lotsa dreamy hugs,
Rochelle

Rochelle, as someone who travels a lot, this is very relatable. I’ve had tons of dreams where I’m stuck at the airport for some reason or forgot something. Great story and bittersweet ending, remembering her dad.
Have a great weekend,
David

Yes, you do an amazing amount of traveling. (I’m kind of jealous). Let me know if you ever make it this direction again. I truly enjoyed our all too brief visit all those years ago. Thank you re my story. A pleasant weekend to you, too.

Isn’t it amazing how the people we’ve lost still show up lifelike in our dreams? It doesn’t matter how long they’ve been gone.
