WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – TWILIGHT

Published October 26, 2019 by rochellewisoff

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s comment section.

The story is 44 words without the title. 😉

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR TELEVISION SET

The  Twilight Zone’s theme song sent shivers down my spine. But The Outer Limits’ intro scared the you-know-what out of me with, “Do not attempt to adjust the picture…We will control the vertical. We will control the horizontal.”

How I long for those days.

Submitted for your approval…you’ll find both intros below. Somehow everything was scarier in black and white and you’re between 6-10 years old. 😉

How can I resist 28 words? These prompts always take me to different places. This week it took me here:

GILT BY COMMISSION

Each portrait presents a new obstacle. Some are more challenging than others. How was I supposed to paint the aurora borealis in sepia tones? What the customer wants…

I didn’t include the title in the word count. The story is 89 words.

BEAUTY FOR ASSES

To supplement our income, I signed on as a makeup consultant.

I went from one “Rah-Rah” meeting to another. We were Marilee’s moonbeams. Marilee encouraged me with her sweet effervescent smile. Dreams of pink Cadillacs filled my head.

One quarter I even won a jeweled brooch for sales.

In the midst of my so-called success, Mom lost her battle with cancer. Instead of offering comfort, Marilee encouraged me, with that ingratiating smile of hers, to get out there and “sell, sell, sell” as if that would replace my mother.

I can’t help myself. To me this is the ultimate therapy. My mental health time. 😉 No apologies for my recurring theme.

FREESTYLE

My happy spot

Solace and solitude

A place to connect with my inner mermaid child

Next best thing to love

A 25-foot concrete trench

Filled with chlorinated water

My liquid haven.

These word prompts seem to dredge up memories for me. Not sure why.

STALEMATE

Midnight rendezvous, filled with frustration and weeping defined our relationship in the beginning.

Weeks turned into years. I despaired of ever winning an argument, so skilled was he at manipulation. I couldn’t deny those deep-brown eyes. They’d captured my heart and held me captive.

Finally, I delivered an ultimatum to my beloved adversary. “Pick up your toys or no Sesame Street!”

147 words (not including title 😉 )

MODERN ANTIQUITY

A summer breeze with a touch of autumn ruffled my hair as my husband and I perused the annual art fair. My favorite tent housed a collection of elaborate mixed media paintings. In one particularly intricate piece, the artist depicted bits of Kansas City history from the Civil War’s Battle of Westport to the roaring 20’s.

At another booth I try on a handmade porkpie hat. “Whatcha think?”

Jan grins. “It’s you.”

We move onto the next tent. “Abstract.” I sniff. “Not my cup of tea.”

Vestiges of the 19th century are apparent in not quite downtown Kansas City. Restaurants and saloons have taken up residence in many of the historic buildings. The brick walls and high ceilings are evidence of times past. I swear I almost heard wagon wheels on old dusty roads.

Westport, where past and present converge, is a museum in its own right.

Jan.

Yours Truly. Nope, didn’t buy the hat.

Word Prompt

Teapot

Challenge

This morning I wrote the first memory this word stirred. Thanks for the challenge, Sammi. 😀

SENTIMENTAL VALUE

“Just a dime store piece of junk.” Mom set the elephant-shaped teapot on the whatnot shelf. “But it belonged to my mother.”

Years later when my son broke it horsing around I wept. “It was just a piece of dime store junk, but it belonged to my mom.”

The poor teapot is long gone but I did find a picture of the exact same one. It’s considered an antique today. The whatnot shelf is still with us.

THE CLASSICS

There’s something sobering about finding things at flea markets I remember from childhood in the vintage section. What does that make me?

WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – TINKER

Word Prompt

Tinker

Challenge

“Why can’t the English teach their children how to speak?” lamented Professor Henry Higgins and later added, “Americans haven’t spoken it for years.” Although I was born and raised in these United States, I often feel his pain. 😉 So I give you my 75 words entitled,

GRAMMAR POLICE B.O.L.O.

“Joe and me had a great time today in the park.”

“Mary laughed at Joe and I.”

            What’s wrong with this picture?

Let’s tinker a bit with those two sentences and see what happens when we eliminate “Joe and” from the equation.

“Me had a great time today at the park.”

            “Mary laughed at I.”

Truly, I’m not trying to be obnoxious, but it is something for you and me to consider, don’t you think?
