A sharecropper’s son, Matthew Henson never lived in one place very long.
The twelve-year-old dropped out of school in Baltimore to go to sea.
With explorer Richard Peary, Matthew gallivanted from Nicaragua to the Arctic.
In 1909 Henson planted the American flag on the North Pole.

Very cool. Mr. Henson was a free spirit AND a sailor. That makes him OK in my realm. Sharecropper to Top of the World. Quite an accomplishment. Good job and use of the word “Gallavant”.

Yay to him, and just comes to show that no cookie cutter approach works for everyone. As a friend of mine likes to remind her students: “You are people, not cookies.”
I got tired just thinking of gallivanting quite that far … Remarkable people, those!
