A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.
I’ve no doubt my friends who are writers will relate.
FAR AND AWAY
Her hair gleamed in the soft candlelight. Desire flooded him. No longer could he—
“Yoo-hoo, Mom.”
I flinch and stare at him. “What?”
He peers at me over his beer. “You didn’t hear a word I said.”
“What did you say?” I cut into my steak. “Mm. Underdone to perfection. I’m sorry, I had something on my mind.
My son, the professional wordsmith, winks. “You have the writer’s look.”
“What’s that?”
“Your body’s here, but your mind is far away in the hinterlands of your imagination.”
Busted.
Well Duh! You are usually there. lol. Great little story.

Ah yes, m’lady, it is a wondrous land that we inhabit, with mountains and monsters and larceny and love.
Sometimes, as you so elegantly express, we feel total surprise when an alternative reality intrudes.

Dear CE,
We do live in our own little worlds, don’t we? How dare others think they have the right to intrude. Thank you for a lovely comment.

Oh yes, I can certainly relate to that. I have to dismiss all thoughts of storytelling when I’m driving my car!

Dear Keith,
I’ve missed many a turn off. Not a good idea to spin stories while driving. 😉 Thank you.

Hey Rochelle,
Right. The lady selling the master’s class online said, interruptions are a problem for writers. True.
Well done.
On the other side….I often really do not hear what they say.
I have found that multi-tasking causes me to mess up everything. I ether eat, talk, listen, or think, or write. If I try to do more than one at a time, disaster strikes. 🙂
Peace,
Bill

Dear Bill,
When I was a child, my report cards often had question marks under “Pays Attention.” I’ve always been a daydreamer which I’ve learned is often synonymous with writer. I’m guilty of multitasking as well. It’s hard to concentrate on one thing at a time. …I’m sorry, what did you say? 😉

Forgive me if this sounds like gender bias, but it seems to me that women are better at multi-tasking than are men. I used to claim that superpower at work, but I was lying. 🙂

Nothing like being interrupted and brought back to the present when your mind is crafting the next story. Nice use of the prompt, Rochelle 🙂

Dear Adele,
I’ve always had a hard time staying in the present. Even as a kid. (Detaching and internal storytelling were my coping mechanisms). Seems it’s turned into a gift. 😉 Thank you.

Yeah, I think I know the FEEL of that look … and if we don’t spend at least some of the time there, we’re kinda’ doomed. At least that’s how I feel. It’s an ‘essential space’ … 🙂

Rochelle,
Hahahaha! It was that million mile stare, in which you were concocting all manner of scenarios whilst trying to keep your feet on the ground at the same time. Impossible . . . 😉
For me, I give myself away when I start talking to myself. My daughter will peek out at me and be like “You’re doing it again”. Which means I am immersed in writing something, LOL. We had kids so they could call us on such matters, I believe it.

Dear Marco,
I’ve always been called a daydreamer. 😉 What began as a coping mechanism has become an exciting gift. How often my husband has said “It’s like you’re a million miles from here.” “Yeah? And your point?”
Thank you for coming by and leaving such a lovely comment.

Nothing wrong with a million miles from here honey . . it saves you the traveling expenses!
You’re lovely. Enjoy your evening.
