A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.
My Grandma Miriam
Was a cynical and lonely
Old woman who bequeathed
Her reflections and perceptions
To her descendants in prolific poetry.
My heritage.

IMAGERY*
In fancy I see, like a flock of birds
Diverse poems from here and there,
Each with a different song in its throat,
Winging its way toward the editor’s chair.
Some fly low, of earthy things to tell,
While others to the sky must soar,
Each longs to impart,
What is in its soul and heart,
To a sympathetic editor.

Delightful poem, m’lady.
Chapeau to Grandma Miriam

Wow! Double treat – from you and from your grandma!
And … here’s to words being heard.
Amen.

I think Grandma was in her early 70’s when she wrote these poems. I find myself relating to them more than ever. 😉 Although she edited one of my poems when I was nine and it took me years to forgive her. 😀 Thank you.

LOL, yeah, I can see how that would’ve been a hard pill to swallow. As a child I probably would have wanted to ‘edit’ some of hers in return! 😉
And … here’s to wisdom with age (which, as we know, not everyone reaches …) 😉

Dear Rochelle,
Thank you for sharing your grandmother’s poetry. How lovely that she bequeathed her gift for words to you. Now which one bequeathed your artistic talents?
Shalom and lotsa poetic love,
Dale

Dear Dale,
Grandma did encourage me to write. Although the real passion for it didn’t come until many years after she passed. Her poetry book is very precious to me as are the words between the covers. As for the artistic talents came from both sides. 😉 Thank you.
Shalom and lotsa prolific hugs,
Rochelle

I can well imagine this book is. Such a treasure. I wish something like that would fall in my lap but alas, there are none.

I looked for it for years, thinking it was packed away until a family friend messaged me to tell me she had a book of poetry ‘my mother wrote.’ She said my dad had given it to her and she thought I might like to have it. I was so thrilled! I told her it wasn’t my mom but my grandmother who wrote it and thanked her profusely. 😀 😀 😀

Dear Rochelle,
So interesting gazing at a lovely portrait and a wonderful poem written by your grandmother, given the temptation to make connections with what we know of you. But you are you, and I for one can’t detect much shared cynicism with your worthy forebear. Talent? Yes! 😉

Dora

Dear Dora,
As i recall, Grandma was downright bitter at times. Did I mention opinionated to a fault? Yes, my heritage, hopefully is not the cynicism so much as the writing ability. 😉 Thank you.
Shalom,
Rochelle

This is wonderful, Rochelle.
I knew none of my biological grandparents. They died before I was born. I have a few things that belonged to one grandfather (after whom I’m named).
I envy your treasure.
Peace,
Bill

Dear Bill,
One of the lovely things about the book is the inscription in the front “With all my love and best wishes, Mom–Grandma.” It was how she signed family letters. When I was growing up she lived far away from Missouri in Monticello, NY. She was my very first pen pal. Seeing her handwriting, even now brings back precious memories. Thank you.
Shalom,
Rochelle
