A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.

Mrs. Ervine’s glaring stare bores through me. “What is the capital of Texas?”
My nine-year-old heart crashes against my ribcage. “T?”
“Not funny.” The teacher leans into my face. “If you’d been paying attention, you’d know it’s Austin. How many times do I have to tell…?
I knew it would one day catch up with me. Daydreaming. Wayward thoughts cavorting in space, ever colliding…
“Miss Wisoff, what did I just say?”
“Could you repeat it, Mrs. Ervine?”
Aww, so sweet.

Dear Rochelle,
Teachers never seem to accept the dreamers. Of course, there are times to dream and times to pay attention 😉 Lovely take on the prompt!
Shalom and lotsa creative love,

Dear Dale,
My fourth grade teacher put question marks by “pays attention” on my report cards. True story. I can’t say I’ve gotten much better but at least a lot of that daydreaming leads to words on the page. Thank you.
Shalom and lotsa hugs,
Rochelle

I’m sure many of history’s writers and artists were daydreamers in their time, their minds forever drifting away to another place. A lovely story Rochelle.

Dear Keith,
I’ve since learned how to use my daydreaming. But it really was a source of contention in school. Sigh. 😉 Thank you.

Ah, that daydreaming can so often be a life-saver. Not very helpful for classroom learning, though. … 😉

Na’ama Y’karah,
When I was in the throes of writing Please Say Kaddish for Me we visited our son in California. One day, as we ate in a restaurant, he told me I had a writer’s look. I asked what that was. He said, “You’re physically here, but your mind is somewhere else.”
Truly, my teachers didn’t understand. Thank you.

Wayward thoughts? You? Lol. I have experienced you being somewhere else while sitting right beside me once or twice. Well…..maybe more than once or twice. Good story, although totally NOT fiction. Writers.

Dear Jan,
The only fictional thing about this story is the teacher’s name. 😉 Thanks, m’luv

A lot of teachers would be thrilled that nine year old you would capitalize texas. Many would reflect on the engagement and efficacy of their lesson. Some would wonder about the daydreams. A few would even encourage and nurture the daydreams.
(from a wayward ex-teacher)
Did you turn out all right?
Yeah.
Shalom.

Dear Dee,
I don’t think I ever actually said T was the capitol of Texas. 😉 I did, however do a lot of daydreaming and drawing when I wasn’t supposed to in class. Did I turn out all right? I guess it depends on whom you ask. 😀 Thank you. I’m guessing you were a fun teacher.

Dear Rochelle,
Rare is the teacher that doesn’t feel threatened by students that think their own thoughts. But you can’t keep a good kid down! 🤗

Dear Dora,
I did have some amazing teachers. Although a few were frustrated by my wandering mind. 😉 Thank you.

Isn’t it amazing? What I once considered a detriment I now see as a gift. 😀 Thank you.

I’d give you an A-plus for the daydreaming! Imagination, creativity… these are things of which we want more, not less. 😊

Dear Rochelle,
I really enjoyed reading this. Daydreaming can be a detriment sometimes but it can also lead to great creativity as in your case.
