ON A ROLL
My father was a cook by trade and a baker by passion.
There was nothing he loved more than cooking for a crowd or creating delicious desserts. Pineapple cheese pecan pie was his signature dish. It’s my decided opinion that the Philadelphia cream cheese company owes him for the publicity. In fact, as I was giving birth to my third son, Dear Old Dad was outside the door feeding the nurses cherry-cream-cheese muffins.
At his funeral a year later, the young rabbi delivered a beautiful eulogy.
I couldn’t help but think, “If Dad were here, he’d bake her a pie.”
My dad is the reason I became a cake decorator. We took a class together. I surprised him with this cake on his 65th birthday. 😀

Beautiful reflection.

Your Dad was a wonderful cook/baker. I always looked forward to his meals. His other phenomenal trait was his humor. He could have been a professional stand up comic. He was that good. A great tribute to him M’Luv.

Dear Anonymous Jan,
I wish I could find the photo of you getting ready to cut into the cake. Dad did enjoy cooking for a crowd, didn’t he? I do miss his sense of humor. In a given situation, I still think “I know what Dad would say…” Thank you, m’luv.

I love the story, and the memories, and the photo of the Head Cake! I’m always tickled to think who ate what. Like a little kid, I wonder who got the nostrils and if there were boogers … 😉 Can you tell I work with younglings? 😉

Na’ama Y’karah,
I don’t know about boogers, but the nose was a lump of icing. It was more like sculpting in clay than icing a cake. So much fun. Of course the most fun was my dad’s reaction. Thank you for such a great comment. Yes I can tell your clientele. 😉

Dear Linda,
As I worked as a cake decorator for all those years, I used to think how proud Dad would’ve been. After all, it was his idea to take a cake decorating class together. What fun that was! He never got the hang of it. Arthritis in his hands prevented him. However he usually came to class with something tasty to feed the class. Thank you.

With Father’s Day approaching your story honoring your dad is timely. He has a kindly face. What a nice thing to share with him. I’d love that recipe if you care to give it 🙂

Dear Lisa,
I don’t know that I even remember what kind of cake it was, let alone have a recipe. I do remember baking the cake in two Pyrex bowls. The base cake was baked in a 5″ round pan. Mostly I used my fingers to sculpt his likeness in icing.
I’ve thought a lot about Dad lately. He smiles at me every day from the picture I posted. It’s propped on the shelf beside my desk. 😀 He was a very giving man with a sharp sense of humor. A pun and a tune for any occasion.
Thank you.

Rochelle, I mean your Dad’s signature dish, “Pineapple cheese pecan pie” recipe. Cool to know how you did Dad’s cake though. If I can get a cake to rise, I’m happy.
I’m glad he is on your mind, which probably means you are on his mind as well. I can see you in your Dad through your writing and comments.
You’re very welcome,
Shalom,
Lisa

Oh duh! The Philadelphia Cream Cheese recipe book disappeared a long time ago. At any rate I combed the internet and this is one that looks pretty close to what I remember. https://www.thekitchenmagpie.com/pineapple-pie/#wprm-recipe-container-56982 Enjoy!

That cake takes the term “Eat me!” to an entirely different place. It must have been surreal for him to eat a rendition of his head. As is the art of cake decorating. I’m always amazed by what people can do and how people can eat art, even when that’s its purpose.

Dear Nobbin,
I have to admit that watercolor is a more satisfying art form for me. No one eats my paintings. At least, not that I’m aware of. 😉 Thank you.
