UNTAMED

“Oh, you can’t be serious, Margaret,” said Ethel. “He gave that monstrosity to a young child. It will give her nightmares. What’s wrong with a Teddy Bear?”

“Mortimer isn’t too keen on Teddy Bears. Too cliché.”

“Then he shouldn’t have one. But a stuffed chimpanzee for a one-year-old?”

Margaret smiled. Her husband had brought the stuffed monkey he’d named Jubilee a few days prior.

She led Ethel to her daughter’s room where Jane slept with her arm curled around the monkey. “See for yourself.”

To this day, ninety years later, Jane Goodall’s beloved Jubilee sits on her dresser in London.

  • My Nana had a stuffed monkey that I loved. It was made of real monkey fur sooo, not really a good thing but I didn’t know that! She gave it to me when I was a teenager. I had it for many years but it didn’t keep well. I also love the documentaries on Jane and her studies of chimpanzees. I think there’s something in her life’s work that every human should learn.

  • If i believed in such things as living heroes/heroines, then Ms. Goodall would be one of my favorite. From the first time I saw her picture in Nat. Geo. and read the article, I followed every article thereafter. I dreamed of exploring the jungles… of making a positive difference in the wicked and demented world. She was/is/and will ever be an inspiration! ❤ Shalom, Bear!

  • You never know what’s going to spark a lifelong passion. My mom still has a chimpanzee plush from when she was a kid. I think its name is Chimpee. She’s never shown any inclination toward monkeys other than being a fan of Planet Of The Apes.
