BRAIN FOG

Elise’s cheeks blazed against the cold tile. The last thing she remembered was writing a check at the register when a wave of nausea and lightheadedness swept over her. The helpless feeling of losing control as she lost consciousness rushed back. She squirmed, wishing she could dissolve between the cracks. How many of those “gentle action” pink pills had she taken in anticipation of dinner?

You know you’re too damn smart for your own good,” her frustrated support group leader had snapped at her night before last. “Why do you even bother coming to meetings anyway?”

    • Dear Violet,

Those support groups were definitely full of trap doors for me. As were books about someone’s recovery from eating disorders. I paid more attention to what they did that “worked” than how they overcame. Thank you.

  • Congratulations Rochelle on your new book, wishing you loads of success. The excerpt grabbed my attention, perhaps some day, even though i have trouble focusing on anything more than 100 words 😛

  • Ah, when the road to recovery passes through many a room of self-destruction first. There is a bottom, someplace, but it is not always hit when one needs it to, or when others wish to make it. A cutting excerpt. An all-too-frequent reality in support groups where the support, though well-intended, ends up a tool for deeper holes … Great book, by the way. 🙂 Na’ama

    • Na’ama Y’karah,

Those support groups were most definitely educational. 😉 I, I mean Elise learned a lot. And it did take years to finally drop to the bottom. Thank you re the book. Thank you for being a wonderful beta reader.

      Shalom,

  • Dear Ethyl Mermaid W(T)F,

Great excerpt. Missed you this weekend. The Joplin Library was a wonderful venue and a much easier drive than Branson.

Your closing line reminded me of something that sneaky little mime would say.

    • Dear Michigan J. Frogmire,

The library does look like it was a nice venue. I missed seeing you and the Pennells this weekend. However the bat mitzvah was lovely and I just couldn’t figure out how to be in two places at once. Not even in an invisible box.

Sneaky little mime? WhatEVER do you mean? 😉

  • Dear Rochelle,

Perfect exerpt to use for this photo. And I am not a fan of many of the groups as you have shown so perfectly here but also, depending on the type, they keep you in the mindset rather than help you move forward.

    Shalom and lotsa healthy love,

    Dale
