Description: There is a red brick building with what looks like a small courtyard with a couple of small trees in the foreground. There are three roadsigns in the lefthand corner that read “One way, End One Way” and “No Turn on Red.” There are taller buildings behind the brick building. There’s also a flight of stairs beside the red brick building that are painted red and blue.

DO THIS, DON’T DO THAT
“Sign, sign, everywhere a sign…” Jan kept the beat on the steering wheel as he sang along with the radio.
Rochelle looked up from her research for her next Friday Fictioneers story on her iPhone. “What would we do without road signs?”
“Do I sense a history lesson?”
“The first two drivers in Detroit collided. Perhaps if there’d been signs their tragic deaths could’ve been prevented. By the 1920’s standardized road signs were developed. Of course they don’t prevent every accident, since people don’t pay attention. Speaking of…uh honey?”
“What now?”
“You’re going the wrong way on a one-way street.”

Love this – and really love the audio. Great job!

So many other things necessary to make the internal combustion engine useful. Petrol stations, tarmac roads, road signs, speed limits. Nicely done, Rochelle.

Dear Neil,
These days I wonder why they bother to post speed limits. 😉 Thank you.

I was going to post that song in its entirety but the Muppets were so engaging. 😉

I can’t believe Sesame St included the line “I wish I was dead” back then! I guess times have changed a little. But back to your story – excellent voice acting skills from both participants… almost as though it’s not fiction 😉

Dear Jen,
Well, Jan is pretty used to the history lessons. 😉 While this story is fiction it does sound very much like actual conversations. 😉 Thank you.

haha! I liked your two-part audio reading with Jan. Signage is way overdone, but with 2 ton metal death machines driven by distracted drivers, not sure if there is a better way. That intersection, btw, is a living nightmare. Across the street from the VanAndel Arena in downton Grand Rapids. Thanks for using my pic this week. I was walking to the arena for a Billy Strings concert. Used to party hearty in The Bob many moons ago.

🙂 I enjoyed the story along with the history lesson. You are correct; not everyone pays attention to signboards, at least not in my country.

Both entertaining and a great lesson on the development of road signs. Of course some people forget that courtesy towards other drivers prevents road rage.

Dear James,
It seems to me that whatever courtesy might have been left, died with COVID. Drivers are totally nuts today. Sign? What sign? Thank you re my story.

At first, I thought you were doing both voices. “Wow! That’s some impressive vocal dexterity.”
That happened to me in Cleveland. My friend pulled off the freeway and turned going the wrong way on a one way street with no way to pull off for a block or two. Fortunately, it was around 3 in the morning, and we didn’t see any other cars.

Dear Nobbin,
I actually had it happen to me coming out of a parking lot yesterday. Fortunately no one else was coming up the path. Oops. I blame it on road construction and a myriad of detours.
Nope…can’t go quite that low or raspy vocally. 😉
Thank you for driving by with a fun comment.

Oh my goodness, Rochelle, no apology needed. In fact, I need to apologize to everybody because I never seem to have a moment to sit down and read all the stories. And then when I do, I fall asleep! I really need to parcel out my time better! 🙁
