LEGALLY BLACK
Gazing out the window, she pondered the studio executive’s suggestion. “Fredi, you could easily pass for French and become a Hollywood star.”
“What happens if I’m found out?”
Despite her green eyes and pale skin, Fredi Washington remained true to her heritage. Was it her fault ignorant white audiences swallowed the notion of black inferiority hook, line and stinker?
Black actors should not have to stoop to stereotypical portrayals of shuffling servants. Clenching her teeth, Fredi folded her arms.
Turn her back? Pass?
“No. I’m a mighty proud gal. Why should I have to pass for anything but an artist?”

Dear Violet,
I’m always saddemed and appalled by those stories of early Hollywood with its oppression and unfair treatment of actors of color. Happy to introduce you. 😉 Thank you.

Thankfully those days have gone, at least for black (and female) actors. Still many other shades, cultures, etc. that are expected to shuck and jive in their own way 😦

Dear Rochelle,
Awful what Blacks had to go through then. Not for nothing people like Josephine Baker moved to France where they were free from racism and were able to become big starts.
I didn’t know about this one. Thank you, once again, for opening our eyes to another courageous woman who stood fast to who she was.
Shalom and lotsa determined love,

Nothing like waiting until the last day to reply. 😉
I’m appalled at the stories I read for what black and Asian actors went through during the “Golden Age” of Hollywood. Or should I say the white age?
Thanks for coming along for the ride. No doubt there are many others who will want their stories told. 😉
Shalom and lotsa eye opening hugs,
Rochelle

There is no logic, and no science, to racism. Trying to rationalize it makes these creeps even more racist. Great story, and another great find for your women in history collection.
(And I’m awfully late with my feedback this week.)

History is made by those who take a stand for better or worse. Unfortunately, people like Fredi Washington are often buried by the people who stand on their shoulders and benefit from the person who stood up before them.

Rochelle, Fredi’s story is an inspiration about doing what is right and literally having the confidence to be comfy in one’s own skin!
Also, I did complete my story for this prompt, but got swamped with family stuff earlier this month. And so, when tomorrow’s prompt comes out, I might double up because I have another short installment for my Uncle Ted series. See you soon.
