About Rochelle

Hi there. I’m Rochelle Wisoff-Fields, an award-winning artist and author with numerous published short stories and several books to my name. Sounds impressive, no?

A little more about me:

I studied painting and lithography at the Kansas City Art Institute. After two years of disputing what was art and what wasn’t with my instructors, I decided to have a baby and dropped out. I spent much of the summer of 1973 fighting morning sickness while working as a caricature/portrait artist at the newly opened theme park, Worlds of Fun.

Although I have always enjoyed working in pencil or pen and ink, my preferred media is watercolor. There’s a freedom to it that I never found with any other media. Painting is an intuitive adventure where I allow my brush to lead.

A few years back I was stricken with a passion for writing. Apparently I had something to say. 😉 My books include my historical trilogy, Please Say Kaddish for Me, From Silt and Ashes, and As One Must, One Can. These are loosely based on my grandparents who were Russian Jewish immigrants who settled in the Midwest at the turn of the twentieth century. My short stories have been published in several anthologies. More of my illustrations are included in my own short story anthology This, That and Sometimes the Other.

I had the privilege of designing and painting most of my book covers and I created illustrations for A Stone for the Journey, the coffee table companion volume to my historical trilogy.

My latest novel-to-be, Last Dance with Annie is the story of a middle-aged military wife battling anorexia nervosa. It is a fictional account of the author’s own struggle. It is soon to be released by Ozark Hollow Press.

I live in Belton, MIssouri with my husband Jan Fields. We’ve raised three sons. I’m a cockeyed introvert who enjoys blogging, reading, Jewish folk dancing and swimming. My weekly blog challenge “Friday Fictioneers” has a worldwide following. If you like to write and enjoy a 100 word to challenge CLICK HERE Every Wednesday for the weekly photo prompt.

  • What a unique, fun idea! This picture-prompt way of linking up writers and their thoughts. I’ve been pumping out words for more than 40 years and I can’t recall the last time I came across something quite as unique as this one. Nicely done.

  • I found your blog through 40 Again’s blog. I’d love to participate in Friday Fictioneers but wasn’t sure how to begin. Is it just by writing a story and adding it to the link page? That seems simple enough. Didn’t know if I needed an invite. 🙂

  • I found you through Alastair’s blog…hopefully you will see soon if I can figure out how to link…that I was inspired by one of his stories to pen a different view. I am mostly a poet but have been having fun dabbling in fiction.

Continued success in your publications. I have had some items printed, but alas after 40 years of writing am still unpaid. But I am still enjoying myself. I have two grown sons, and a grandson. Married for over 30 years. Life is good. Cheers.

  • Hi Rochelle. I am not sure how else to communicate with you, so i am hijacking this place. I really enjoy the Friday Fictioneers. Thanks for being willing to manage it for those of us with Fiction in our hearts. I also want to ask a favor. I would like to host a fiction challenge for April Fool’s day where writers publish either their greatest prank story or create a fictional one. Would you mind if I leave a short promotion to that at the end of my Friday Fictioneers post for this week? If that is acceptable i would like to know how to add the winky like you do so the stories would be linked. Thanks again for your work as host.

  • Rochelle, I came across your name on the To Breathe is To Write blog and said, “A relative?!” My last name was Wisoff until I married, and I have always assumed that anyone with that unusual last name must be related to me…and so far they always have been. I don’t know if you are nee Wisoff or Fields, but maybe we could explore? Claire Harrison

  • Ooops! It’s 2:00AM and I just woke up and realised I forgot to include the Award in my post. It’s there now. I plead a blonde moment even though I’m not blonde 🙂

  • Hi Rochelle! I wanted to see if you knew anyone capable of creating a custom badge like the Friday Fictioneers you have on yours. I plan to do a tag team story next month and would like a nifty little badge to go with the effort.

  • I am so pleased to have stumbled across your blog. I did a couple of Friday fictioneers through Madison Wood’s blog and will now try my hand at writing a few through here x

  • Thanks for hosting this great writing exercise. Last night at writers group, we were doing spur-of-the-moment writing exercises. I usually struggle to write like that, but last night, ideas and words flowed. Writing was fun! The only change in my writing habits recently is reading and writing these 100-word stories. I owe it all to you and the Friday Fictioneers.

  • Hi Rochelle,
Gosh I’m glad you mentioned reading just the five around your submission and then others that interest you! I know you read them all (there’s a special place in Heaven for you) and I’ve done it several times, but this last week, I had bridge at my house (dinner/ladies) and didn’t have time to read them all. Thank you so very much for being our Fearless Friday Flash Fiction Femme Fatalle! I know I didn’t spell this right, but I hope you understand me. Have a great week Rochelle! Nan

  • By the way, why I contacted you to begin with, is why do some people have a green check-mark in the upper left hand corner and others do not. You have had one before (not this week) and so has Russell. Dawn (Tales from the Motherland) has one this week and so does K.Z.? Stupid question, but it was bugging me. THANKS!

  • Rochelle, I am having trouble linking my Friday Fictioneer challenge – can you help me with this? I’m tech challenged, I’m afraid. 🙂 I posted the response to the challenge on my blog this morning and put a link to your site, but am not sure how to come to your site and link. Thanks! Kate
