WHAT IS MOTHERHOOD MADE OF?

At twenty I had the requisite for motherhood—a husband and a womb. I danced for joy when the tests came back positive.

However, after Daniel’s birth, I resented him. I wanted sugar and spice. Instead, I got snips and snails.

One night, after putting the baby to bed, I turned on the television to an ad for flame retardant pajamas. Images of once handsome children, burned and scarred beyond recognition riddled me with guilt.

I bolted from the sofa to the nursery, gathered Daniel into my arms, inhaled his sweetness and whispered, “I love puppy dog tails.”

To whom it may or may not concern,

Please excuse me from participating in this week’s weekend writing prompt. You see I’m tethered to a stubborn muse who’s giving me the silent treatment. And now my imaginary friends refuse to let me play with their toys.

I will miss the interaction with other bloggers, but I just don’t have eighty words to spare. If that’s not enough, the dog ate my printer paper. Thank you for your understanding.

Shalom,

Rochelle

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Black ink was once my preferred medium.

Friends claimed it ran through my veins.

These days intuitive watercolor

Has taken ink’s place.

BEFORE WE WENT THERE

“I bet I can make this one reach the stars.” Eight-year-old Alan spun the propeller of his latest model airplane. “Maybe it’ll even fly across the whole galaxy.”

“Aw, you’re goofy.” Bobby caught a firefly and dropped it into a fruit jar. “It’s just a toy.”

Alan dropped down on the ground. Cool grass tickled his neck. He gazed at the stars in the dark summer sky. “Someday. You wait and see. I’m going to fly clear to outer space.”

“Say hello to the little green men for me when you do.”

Alan Shepard was the first American to travel to outer space in May 1961. So began the Space Race.

Sidewalk art fairs

A leap outside my comfort zone.

Either ego boosting.

Or ego busting.

Braving iffy weather,

Vendors compete for sales.

Yet bond

Over common aspirations,

Will it end in a joyful crescendo?

Or crushing disappointment?

This weekend turned out to be a good one weather-wise. Made some lovely connections and sold a lot of note cards. Getting involved in these vendor events is definitely like a box of chocolates. 😉 Ya never know what you’re gonna get.

Isn’t it uncanny? This is one prompt I can seem to resist. Thanks, Sammi. 😉 I waxed sentimental with this one.

MYSTERY OF MOTHERHOOD

Isn’t it uncanny

How, in a moment, a tiny bean

Turned my world right-side-up

When he

Circled his hand

Around my finger?

And nearly half a century later

He still maintains a firm grip

On my heart and soul.

DUMPSTER DIVING

I forage for a morsel to fill my void.

Finding an inviting container labeled applesauce,

I open it, anticipating its sweetness,

Only to be repulsed by a thick layer of green fuzz.

My disappointed stomach rumbles.

Next, I find a sliver of stale pizza.

It tastes like cardboard.

What do I care?

I’m starving.

The stench of rotted vegetables overpowers me.

How did I sink to this level of despair?

I must rise above it.

Today.

Yes!

Today I’ll clean this refrigerator.

I promise it’s not that bad. 😉

Weekend Word Prompt – Element

Once more I’m led down Memory Lane. I can’t say I miss the job, but I did have some good times and meet some interesting people. The photo has very little to do with the story. It’s me with my very first book–an anthology of short stories. I had five more years to go at the J.O.B.

My grocery store coworker loved the element of surprise. More than once he snuck up on me while I decorated a cake.

“Boo!”

“Wait for it, Danny Boy. You’ll get yours.

One evening I squirted royal blue icing under his driver’s side door handle.

Revenge is sweet.

TREASURES

One Christmas I asked for a literary agent with a contract and a huge check. Of course, it was a silly request. Nonetheless, my son did his best to fulfill my wish. A blue-suited, yellow figurine clutching a large red checkmark holds a place of honor next to Mickey Mouse and plastic Disney fairies. Worthless kitsch, you say? These tchotchkes—like my mom’s half-century-old dashboard ornament—make me smile.

A friend has referred to these doo-dads that sit on the shelf above my computer screen as my altar. Not sure about that, but each of them holds a special memory for me. BTW, whimsical clay figures are a sideline for my middle son whose main profession is that of a TV writer. (Proud mom with kvelling rights).

ISN’T IT IRONIC?

What were we laughing about with my in-laws’ when “they” came? My infant son’s antics perhaps?

Two faceless Air Force uniforms. “We’re sorry…”

A light snuffed out too soon.

One call turned the world upside down.

Would we ever laugh again?

I know it’s a sad one, but I have to go where the muse sends me. My husband’s brother, Jerry, died in a car accident when he was in the Air Force, stationed in Turkey in 1974. He was one of the funniest, sharpest people I have ever known. If this sounds familiar, I wrote about him for another weekend word prompt in 2019. Click here to read that one.
