MODERN ANTIQUITY

A summer breeze with a touch of autumn ruffled my hair as my husband and I perused the annual art fair. My favorite tent housed a collection of elaborate mixed media paintings. In one particularly intricate piece, the artist depicted bits of Kansas City history from the Civil War’s Battle of Westport to the roaring 20’s.

At another booth I try on a handmade porkpie hat. “Whatcha think?”

Jan grins. “It’s you.”

We move onto the next tent. “Abstract.” I sniff. “Not my cup of tea.”

Vestiges of the 19^th century are apparent in not quite downtown Kansas City. Restaurants and saloons have taken up residence in many of the historic buildings. The brick walls and high ceilings are evidence of times past. I swear I almost heard wagon wheels on old dusty roads.

Westport, where past and present converge, is a museum in its own right.

This morning I wrote the first memory this word stirred. Thanks for the challenge, Sammi. 😀

SENTIMENTAL VALUE

“Just a dime store piece of junk.” Mom set the elephant-shaped teapot on the whatnot shelf. “But it belonged to my mother.”

Years later when my son broke it horsing around I wept. “It was just a piece of dime store junk, but it belonged to my mom.”

The poor teapot is long gone but I did find a picture of the exact same one. It’s considered an antique today. The whatnot shelf is still with us.

GRAMMAR POLICE B.O.L.O.

“Joe and me had a great time today in the park.”

“Mary laughed at Joe and I.”

What’s wrong with this picture?

Let’s tinker a bit with those two sentences and see what happens when we eliminate “Joe and” from the equation.

“Me had a great time today at the park.”

“Mary laughed at I.”

Truly, I’m not trying to be obnoxious, but it is something for you and me to consider, don’t you think?

LOOK AT ME

I was sixteen and he was twenty-two—the older man. He didn’t kiss like any of the, albeit few, boys I’d gone out with. His mellow voice took me captive on our first date.

He held doors for me and always walked on the outside of the sidewalk. I felt protected and cherished.

Zepi’s Pizza, our favorite haunt, provided a three-piece band and a small dance floor. When my guy held me and sang “Misty” in my ear, I was as helpless as a kitten up a tree.

“Misty” became our song and, after 50 years, I still feel protected and cherished.

*September 26 marks the 50th anniversary of our first date.

This week I’ve tweaked an excerpt from my novel AS ONE MUST, ONE CAN. It also appears in my coffee table book A STONE FOR THE JOURNEY. The scene takes place in 1908 in Arel Gitterman’s tailor shop. He and his wife Havah are terrified that they are about to face the same brutal persecution in America they endured in Eastern Europe.

Arel pointed to an official looking document in front of him. “I’m in big trouble, Havah.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s an indictment from His Honor Judge Wallace. I could go to prison.”

“What crime did you commit?”

“I’ve opened my shop on Sunday.”

“And this is a crime?”

“According to his Sunday labor law we’re required to observe the Christian Sabbath or pay a penalty. We Jews may open our shops, but if we sell anything we’re in violation.”

Her gorge rising, Havah crumpled the paper in her fist. “Every ass likes to hear himself bray.”

Paul’s twinkling brown eyes, John’s brooding countenance, and Ringo’s childlike grin captivated me. Youth flown, I still thrill to “yeah, yeah, yeah.”
