FORWARD CRAWL

Eight-year-old Johann hurried through breakfast. He couldn’t wait to go to Fullerton Beach. “Swimming lessons, today.”

“What if you drown?” asked his little brother, Peter.

“Drown? I’m going to be the greatest fish in the sea.”

Later, trembling with excitement, he dove into the chilly waves of Lake Michigan, beginning a love affair with the water that never ended.

Johnny Weissmuller, an Olympic gold medal winner, went on to become the most popular on-screen Tarzan of all time.

When a young swimmer asked him for advice, he replied,

“Don’t let go of the vine when you’re swinging through the jungle!”

PUBERTY

We went to Miami Beach the year I turned fourteen.

My first trip to the sea.

I had never seen such a great expanse of water.

The rush of waves crashing against the shore quenched my thirsty ears.

Ultimate peace.

However…

Hormones raged.

Everything went wrong that summer. I didn’t have a Twiggy figure.

My curly hair required constant ironing.

I hated myself and everyone around me.

As the years passed

I worked diligently to make peace with myself.

Water will always be my solace.

Looking back,

I ask myself, if I had it to do over again, would I?

Weekend Writing Prompt – Glow

Published August 15, 2021 by rochellewisoff

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s comment section.

SUN, SAND AND SIBLING REVELRY

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, not that time. Sturgis Bike Rally week.

Can you picture me on a Harley, clad in leather? Me neither. While my husband’s on his annual two-wheeled adventure, I’m heading to North Carolina.

The week zips by. My time’s spent doggy loving, shopping, and swimming. Not to mention bantering with my brother and commiserating with his longsuffering wife.

Back at my computer in Missouri, this landlocked mermaid basks in the fading glow of sunshine on ocean waves. Is it too soon to book next year’s flight?

Thank you, Sammi, for introducing me to a new word. When I learned it’s meaning, the muse took me to my ultimate happy spot. Those who know me well, can guess where I’m going with this. 😉

NUDIBRANCH

Some meditate to achieve absolute peace.

Controlled breathing.

Bio feedback.

For this radiolarian

Tranquility comes in liquid form

Buoying me up to watery heights

Singing an elysian song.

I am a Spanish Dancer,

A sea creature

Blissfully navigating

Waves of purple fan coral

Schools of phthalo-blue tangs

Sunlight beams through the crystalline surface.

Serenity is mine.
