Weekend Writing Prompt – Glacial

Published June 15, 2019 by rochellewisoff

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.

Thank you for the challenge, Sammi.

Older moms cautioned me about wishing my babies’ lives away.

“Rock them. Enjoy every moment.”

Caught up in colic, teething, followed by the ‘terrible two’s,’ their words of wisdom fell on deaf and weary ears.

As my boys grew, they bickered and teased. The days seemed to plod at a glacial pace.

Now they’re grown men, living their lives far away.

Where did the time go?

  • Lovely piece, and very true. I find myself asking the same thing with my nephew. It seems like yesterday that he was a tiny baby in his dad’s arm and now he’s starting school and having conversation, never holding still for too long. Time seems to fly past.

  • Well done nostalgia piece. And, where the heck did that time go? Weren’t we young once? I looked into the mirror this morning and asked myself “Who is that staring back at me?”. Missing our boys today. I do all the time but specifically today on Fathers Day.

  • Ah, the seemingly glacial days of “will they ever go to bed so I can have a moment of peace” that I think are inevitable for any parent … So well captured, along with the beautiful undercurrents of love and wonder. 🙂

    • Na’ama Y’arah,

Admittedly there are things about child rearing I don’t miss. Colic was a nightmare and potty training? Fuhget about it. What I do miss are the hugs with their sweet cheeks against mine. The silly antics and some of the mischief little boys can get into. Yeah, those things I do miss. 😉 Thank you for your kind warming words. 😀

      Shalom,

      • I hear you … I think nature orchestrated it that way to have the sweet-cheeks and silly antics and impossible adorableness coincide with the first years of colic and potty training and sibling fights … (well, hopefully the latter ends or softens after the early years …). 😉
And … yes, I’m sure there is a lot to miss and a lot to be gratful to have moved beyond (like, say, sleeping in, and sleeping through the night … ;))
        🙂
