A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.
A flash fiction for the last Saturday of 2020. The picture has nothing to do with the story. 😉 Happy New Year. May it be a saner and healthier one.
THE ONE
“Jenice, you can’t be serious?”
“Why shouldn’t I?”
“He’s a troglodyte.” I rolled my eyes. “His knuckles practically drag the ground.”
Jenice was the prettiest girl in school. The boys fell all over themselves to ask her out.
Instead, she went to our senior prom with The Incredible Bulk—chubby, beady-eyed, unibrow Malcom William Matson. His very name shouted, “Geek!”
After graduation I married the man of my dreams. Jenice went to med school.
At our class reunion, Drs. Malcom and Jenice Matson celebrated their fortieth anniversary while I nursed wounds from my fifth divorce.
Opposites attract and there’s the proof!

Dear Keith,
In this case opposites definitely attracted. 😉

Love is in the eye of the beholder. Quite often the Queen & King turn out to have miserable relations…ego, who knows. And then quite often the frog turns out to be the prince. Lovely story…as usual.

Dear Jan,
Pretty people aren’t always pretty on the inside, are they? Thanks M’luv. ❤

Sounds to me, m’lady, that the narrator had a more interesting life!

Dear CE,
I’d say the narrator isn’t a very good judge of character when it comes to her choices in men. 😉

I think she saw in him the beauty others did not know to recognize.
Here’s to love.
Well done, Rochelle!

Na’ama Y’karah,
Indeed, she did see his inner beauty. Obviously there was more to Jenice than just a pretty face. 😉 Thank you. 😀

He probably treated her better than the hoards of other boys in school, who only saw her looks (and probably body). Plus, they had common interests, both wanted to be doctors. Alas, in real life I would suppose few popular high school girls would make this choice.

Dear Lisa,
I’ve not doubt he treated her better than the other boys. She wasn’t the kind of girl who did superficial. 😉 Thank you.

Dear Rochelle,
How often do you see that? The pretty girl with the homely boy – and why? Because she knows the difference between outer and inner beauty!
Wonderful take on the prompt.
Shalom and lotsa true love beyond the outer layer,

Dear Dale,
A friend of our family who had looks and personality married a homely man and we all wondered why. As far as I know, they’re still together. She obviously saw something in him that we didn’t. Good for her. Thank you.
Shalom, and lotsa hugs,
Rochelle

You see it so often, like I said. My mother dated two brothers… the handsome one was dumber than a door nail and the other, less handsome, was super interesting and fun… goes to show 😉
