“This photo’s always fascinated me.” I turn over the cardboard and study the foreign print. “Wish I could read it.”

Oxana stares at it. “It’s Russian. Very old.”

I flip it back over and gaze at the girl with ineffable awe, wishing I could read her thoughts. “It’s my grandmother Nettie Weinberg and her mother Edith. Great-grandma looks like she walked right out of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, doesn’t she?”

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR TELEVISION SET

The Twilight Zone’s theme song sent shivers down my spine. But The Outer Limits’ intro scared the you-know-what out of me with, “Do not attempt to adjust the picture…We will control the vertical. We will control the horizontal.”

How I long for those days.

BEAUTY FOR ASSES

To supplement our income, I signed on as a makeup consultant.

I went from one “Rah-Rah” meeting to another. We were Marilee’s moonbeams. Marilee encouraged me with her sweet effervescent smile. Dreams of pink Cadillacs filled my head.

One quarter I even won a jeweled brooch for sales.

In the midst of my so-called success, Mom lost her battle with cancer. Instead of offering comfort, Marilee encouraged me, with that ingratiating smile of hers, to get out there and “sell, sell, sell” as if that would replace my mother.

OH, FOR THICKER SKIN

One morning I went to Amazon, as I do occasionally and found a new review on my first novel that has an average of 4.5 stars. Eagerly I read the latest. Despair riddled me as I skimmed the scathing comments.

“One-dimensional characters. Immature writing.”

By the time I finished reading three paragraphs of venom I couldn’t breathe. My head throbbed.

I quit. I’ll never write another word. I’m a failure.

The next day another review appeared on the same book.

“Fantastic. Realistic characters. Endearing story.”

Whom do I believe? To what voices should I listen?

If only my feelings weren’t so delicate.

This morning I wrote the first memory this word stirred. Thanks for the challenge, Sammi. 😀

SENTIMENTAL VALUE

“Just a dime store piece of junk.” Mom set the elephant-shaped teapot on the whatnot shelf. “But it belonged to my mother.”

Years later when my son broke it horsing around I wept. “It was just a piece of dime store junk, but it belonged to my mom.”

The poor teapot is long gone but I did find a picture of the exact same one. It’s considered an antique today. The whatnot shelf is still with us.

ALL THE AMENITIES

May 1984. We couldn’t wait to take advantage of our newly-purchased lot in a nearby recreational development. So we packed our children-plus-one and everything we needed for a successful camping trip.

Sometime in the night the soothing buzz of locusts gave way to thunder and driving rain that demolished our tents.

Thanks to the help of a sympathetic grounds attendant, our excursion ended in a half-finished bathroom with three bedraggled boys and one engorged mother whose inconsolable baby chose the worst time to wean himself.

Shivering, I muttered to my grumpy husband. “Someday we’ll look back at this and laugh.”

LOOK AT ME

I was sixteen and he was twenty-two—the older man. He didn’t kiss like any of the, albeit few, boys I’d gone out with. His mellow voice took me captive on our first date.

He held doors for me and always walked on the outside of the sidewalk. I felt protected and cherished.

Zepi’s Pizza, our favorite haunt, provided a three-piece band and a small dance floor. When my guy held me and sang “Misty” in my ear, I was as helpless as a kitten up a tree.

“Misty” became our song and, after 50 years, I still feel protected and cherished.

*September 26 marks the 50th anniversary of our first date.
