INNER CHILD

Blind contour drawing. How absurd does that sound? I never cared for the exercise in school and I’m not sure how I feel about it now. The drawing is done in one continuous line without looking.

Recently I did one at a workshop. The instructor asked how I felt about it.

“Vulnerable,” I said. “Like a child.”

“Mission accomplished,” she replied.

Here’s the one I did in the workshop this past Wednesday.

Below is what I did this morning. The instructor suggested I try more contour drawings and add watercolors to them. It is kind of a fun exercise…not sure how I feel about it as an artform. 😉

ISN’T IT IRONIC?

What were we laughing about with my in-laws’ when “they” came? My infant son’s antics perhaps?

Two faceless Air Force uniforms. “We’re sorry…”

A light snuffed out too soon.

One call turned the world upside down.

Would we ever laugh again?

I know it’s a sad one, but I have to go where the muse sends me. My husband’s brother, Jerry, died in a car accident when he was in the Air Force, stationed in Turkey in 1974. He was one of the funniest, sharpest people I have ever known. If this sounds familiar, I wrote about him for another weekend word prompt in 2019. Click here to read that one.

Soaring on the wings of her no. 10 round sable,

She swirls it through wet pigment

And brandishes it across the paper.

Under her hand the background takes shape

Today I’ll downsize.

With a large trash bag at my disposal I dive into the sea of clutter—useless junk—only to rediscover heirlooms—handwritten notes, children’s drawings, a sixty-year-old dreidel—keepsake after keepsake. A sea of treasures and memories. I cannot part with them.

I’ll downsize tomorrow.

Maybe.

In case you wonder what a 60 year old dreidel looks like – It’s a piece of plastic that might have set the synagogue back less than a cent a piece to give each child at the Hanukkah party. To me a priceless keepsake.

MY SHINING PALACE BUILT ON SAND

“My candle burns at both ends,” wrote the poet.

I’ll permit neither frustration nor self-doubt to devour me when my compositions seem to go unnoticed. I’ll neither lollygag nor let my keyboard collect dust. No! I’ll last the night and live to write another day. Whether you see it or not, foes or friends, my candle gives a lovely light.

My little attendants have grandchildren of their own.

Happy Anniversary to Jan Fields, my first husband for 48 years as of November 28!

LONGEVITY

“He’s too wild. She’s only 18 and he’s 25. I give it six months.” My mother told her friends. To me she repeated, “If things don’t work out you still have a bed here.”

The day I announced my first pregnancy her invitations changed to, “You made your bed, now you can lie in it.”

48 years, three sons and two granddaughters later, I still wake up in my bed next to my wild man.

OH, FOR THICKER SKIN

One morning I went to Amazon, as I do occasionally and found a new review on my first novel that has an average of 4.5 stars. Eagerly I read the latest. Despair riddled me as I skimmed the scathing comments.

“One-dimensional characters. Immature writing.”

By the time I finished reading three paragraphs of venom I couldn’t breathe. My head throbbed.

I quit. I’ll never write another word. I’m a failure.

The next day another review appeared on the same book.

“Fantastic. Realistic characters. Endearing story.”

Whom do I believe? To what voices should I listen?

If only my feelings weren’t so delicate.
