Weekend Writing Prompt – Galaxy

Published June 13, 2021 by rochellewisoff

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s comment section.

BEFORE WE WENT THERE

“I bet I can make this one reach the stars.” Eight-year-old Alan spun the propeller of his latest model airplane. “Maybe it’ll even fly across the whole galaxy.”

“Aw, you’re goofy.” Bobby caught a firefly and dropped it into a fruit jar. “It’s just a toy.”

Alan dropped down on the ground. Cool grass tickled his neck. He gazed at the stars in the dark summer sky. “Someday. You wait and see. I’m going to fly clear to outer space.”

“Say hello to the little green men for me when you do.”

Alan Shepard was the first American to travel to outer space in May 1961. So began the Space Race.

Sidewalk art fairs

A leap outside my comfort zone.

Either ego boosting.

Or ego busting.

Braving iffy weather,

Vendors compete for sales.

Yet bond

Over common aspirations,

Will it end in a joyful crescendo?

Or crushing disappointment?

***

This weekend turned out to be a good one weather-wise. Made some lovely connections and sold a lot of note cards. Getting involved in these vendor events is definitely like a box of chocolates. 😉 Ya never know what you’re gonna get.

The Ruskin Heights tornado claimed 44 lives and injured 531 more on May 20, 1957.

Although I wasn’t quite four, I will never forget the eerie yellow-green sky or thick hush the day a tornado demolished a nearby community.

Future Friday Fictioneers Queen 😉

I’m calling this fiction with a side of truth. There are those who have suffered unjustly and then…

RACE CARD

“I never fit in,” she claims through crocodile tears, “because of my color.”

She bemoans her traumatic youth on social media to garner sympathy and hurls wanton accusations.

“You didn’t know me.” She whines.

Did she know me? No way. She was out of my league.

And now she expects me to pity Ms Pretty Popular Prom Queen?

No way.

WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – SOLITUDINARIAN

Over the past year and a half I’ve carefully avoided the C word or any issues surrounding it. There are plenty of rants, whines and opinions raging without adding my own. However this week’s word (after looking it up) elicited my unavoidable response. Seriously I do enjoy social interaction to a degree, but find a lot of it exhausting. Thanks for adding to my vocabulary, Sammi. It actually does describe me to a degree.

WHAT’S A FOURTEEN-LETTER WORD FOR INTROVERT?

When asked in a Zoom interview if quarantine had adversely affected me, I carefully considered my reply.

“In all honesty, my life hasn’t changed much.” I grinned at the young man on my screen. “I paint. I write.”

“Is there any social activity denied you that you really miss?”

I thought about my morning walk to the shut-down fitness center to gaze longingly at the empty pool. “Now that you mention it—swimming laps. Not very social, huh?”

“Do you consider yourself antisocial?”

“I prefer to call myself a solitudinarian.”

Disclaimer: The preceding conversation doesn’t actually appear in the video. 😉

FUTURE AUTHOR

Mrs. Ervine’s glaring stare bores through me. “What is the capital of Texas?”

My nine-year-old heart crashes against my ribcage. “T?”

“Not funny.” The teacher leans into my face. “If you’d been paying attention, you’d know it’s Austin. How many times do I have to tell…?

I knew it would one day catch up with me. Daydreaming. Wayward thoughts cavorting in space, ever colliding…

“Miss Wisoff, what did I just say?”

“Could you repeat it, Mrs. Ervine?”

The daydreamer author at nine.

It’s zero-dark-thirty in the blessed AM

She’s awake and restless,

Her mind ablaze with random ideas.

Nightlife?

Fuhgettaboutit!

So I’m trying Block Editor this morning. Some things don’t work the way I want them to. I’ve tried aligning things to the center and they don’t. Happy early morning to y’all. Shalom, Rochelle

So I’m trying this with Block Editor. There are some features I like and some I really DON’T! At any rate, I’ve a lot to learn. So having said that, I’ll say Shalom and Good morning! Rochelle

WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – UNCANNY

Isn’t it uncanny? This is one prompt I can seem to resist. Thanks, Sammi. 😉 I waxed sentimental with this one.

MYSTERY OF MOTHERHOOD

Isn’t it uncanny

How, in a moment, a tiny bean

Turned my world right-side-up

When he

Circled his hand

Around my finger?

And nearly half a century later

He still maintains a firm grip

On my heart and soul.

WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – FORAGE

DUMPSTER DIVING

I forage for a morsel to fill my void.

Finding an inviting container labeled applesauce,

I open it, anticipating its sweetness,

Only to be repulsed by a thick layer of green fuzz.

My disappointed stomach rumbles.

Next, I find a sliver of stale pizza.

It tastes like cardboard.

What do I care?

I’m starving.

The stench of rotted vegetables overpowers me.

How did I sink to this level of despair?

I must rise above it.

Today.

Yes!

Today I’ll clean this refrigerator.

I promise it’s not that bad. 😉

This prompt didn’t send me into orbit exactly. 😉 Nor does my story defy gravity. Apologies to my favorite Canuck.

“Orbitz.” Dale grimaced.  “The beverage with balls. WTF. You paid $20.00 on Ebay?”

“Retro novelty.” Rochelle took a sip and gagged. “I guess not everything Canadian is as wonderful as peanut butter and Captain Kirk. No wonder this dreck didn’t last a year.”

“It’s dead, Jim. Have a Merlot.”

“L’chaim.”
