A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend. How you use the prompt is up to you. Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like. Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise. If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.
This week the prompt took me back to a poem I wrote when my youngest son was somewhere between four and six. It’s been a long time ago. 😉 I wrote a lot of poetry back then as a means of journalling. I took this one out of mothballs and gave it a trim and an overhaul. The sketch is from the same time.
DAUNTLESS
Today you are a cowboy
Astride your faithful steed.
Other times you’re an intrepid warrior
Stalking family pets.
You live in a world all your own,
Chattering for hours
About nothing in particular.
By turns you are both angel and rogue,
Challenging me to love you
At all cost
To my sanity.
At all costs. Sometimes. LOL. good one.

Dear Keith,
It would be the grandkids now if they didn’t live so far away. 😉 Thank you.

Nicely said, m’lady.
We’ve all had one or two of those in our time, I think, with the big, innocent eyes and the ‘Whaaat?’

Dear CE,
I had three. Not a placid child in the bunch. 😉 Thank you.

Dear Rochelle,
You remembered a poem you wrote 30 years ago? And you knew where it was?
I can’t even recall where I was 30 years ago. Love the sketch.

Dear Bill,
During a particular period of my life I wrote poems (don’t know if they’re good or follow any rules). I wrote about anything and everything–including the travails of motherhood. I wanted to publish some but didn’t know how. At any rate I put together a little book replete with illustrations. This poem was part of it. So the poems in that little book are on my shelf. Thank you.

Rochelle

Aw…. if this does not epitomize parenting a youngster at this age range, I don’t know what does. LOVELY! (and the sketch!!!)

Na’ama Y’karah,
He was a challenge…actually all three of them were. Not a placid one in the bunch and all boys. Although such different personalities, I’ve always said I had one of each. Thank you for your comments and compliments.

I bet they were … (to be fair, their mama isn’t exactly a placid one, eh? 😉 ) — but, I hear ya!!!

Lovely poem — rang a bell with this mama, grandma, great-grandma. BTW, sometimes WordPress notifies me of comments and sometimes not, so often I’ll go for a long time before I check back through the archives to see if any are waiting to be approved. I can’t figure out how to change it, so if I’m a month late, please forgive me!

Dear Eugenia,
I think we’ve all felt this way a time or two. My eldest son never read the books that said boys weren’t as verbal as girls. He was four when I asked him he wasn’t afraid he talked so much he’d choke.
As for the comments. Lately, more often than not, yours and a few others keep finding their way into my trash folder. Not sure why this is happening. Very frustrating and certainly nothing personal. So if I seem slow in my replies, please forgive me. 😉
At any rate, Thank you.

Rochelle

Dear Rochelle,
I cannot for the life of me understand where my comment went. Ah well. Thanks for the noodge. I love this. Mothers of boys. Need we say more?
Shalom and lotsa patient love (where it could be found),

Dear Dale,
I checked my trash folder since I’ve been finding quite a few valid comments there. Yours wasn’t amongst them. Always happy to noodge (Wisoff grin). In retrospect, as much as I’d wanted a little girl each time, I’m thankful to have had boys. And they are men to be proud of. Thank you.
Shalom and lotsa (trying to be patient) hugs,
Rochelle

I probably did it off my phone which can be iffy at times. Oh well. I’m here now. Yeah, I wanted a girl, too and I remember a former co-worker looking at me and saying… “uh no. I don’t see you with girls at all!!” – He, of course, had two girls… Can’t say I am sad with the lot I was given. Besides, got me four nieces so…
