BRINGER OF LIGHT

At bedtime Blume Mabovitch brushed 10-year-old Goldie’s thick, dark curls. “How was school today?”

“Fun. Nothing like Kiev. My teacher says I’m klug—smart.”

Gut. Into bed.” Blume tucked the covers around Goldie’s neck. “When the time comes, you’ll be a balabusta, a good American wife.”

Goldie watched snowflakes flutter past her window, glittering in the streetlight. She shivered and whispered to herself. “Balabustah? Feh! Someday I shall do great things for our Jewish people.”

Goldie’s fire and determination guided her long productive life. As Golda Meir she earned Israel’s love as a champion who helped turn dreams into reality.

*In 1956 when Golda Myerson became Foreign Minister, Prime Minister Ben Gurion urged her to Hebraicize her name. Meir means bringer of light.

  • She was always at the top of my list of admirable politicians. I had no idea she had changed her name from Myerson, but glad she kept “Golda”! Love this bit of biography, Rochelle, enchanting as always.

  • That shows what one can do with intelligence and determination. It’s always nice to see one exceed expectations, even such modest ones.

Is it a coincidence that the Yiddish word for wife is eerily close to “Ball buster?”

    • Dear Jenne,

I imagine Golda was a headstrong child who had a good idea of what she wanted. Apparently her parents arranged a match for her with a man twice her age and she ran away from home. Thank you for your kind words.

      Shalom,

      Rochelle

  • Ah, she did have the long view, this one had. An in many ways ways was WAY ahead of the world in her leadership and in being one of the first elected women leaders in modern history.

    • Dear Sascha,

She was a role model. Thank you for your kind words. Nice that we both used Streisand. 😉 BTW I tried twice to comment on your story. You might find my comments in your spam folder or trash bin.

  • Another fascinating character highlighted by your little gems. I should just read your friday fictions every time I am looking for a biography to read. Speaking of biographies, did you read Francine Klagsbrun’s biography of Israel’s fourth Prime Minister? I hear it is very good. 🙂
