I wrote the following story in my husband’s voice. Ray’s his best friend from junior high into the present.

LOVE IS ALWAYS ON TIME

There’s an old saying. “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

A year ago, I set my best friend Ray up with my girlfriend’s sister Vicky on a blind date.

A month ago Ray and Vicky tied the knot while I was at sea, care of the US Navy. While the war in Vietnam raged my flat-footed 4-F friend and his bride welcomed Peggy Sue.

Last week cancer claimed Vicky. At her sendoff, half the church teemed with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The truth is time speeds by with the velocity of a twin-engine jet whether fun’s involved or not.

Nothing could enthral this young girl like four lads from Liverpool. When they shook those mop tops I nearly swooned. No one could rock a guitar rift like George, the quiet one. Paul’s twinkling brown eyes, John’s brooding countenance, and Ringo’s childlike grin captivated me. Youth flown, I still thrill to “yeah, yeah, yeah.”

SWEET FULFILLMENT

At Ben Gurion airport in Tel-Aviv my cousin and I settled in for a twelve-hour wait.

A young man clutching a colorful bouquet and heart-shaped balloon caught our attention.

“Do you suppose he’s waiting for his arranged-for bride?” asked Kent.

“Doubtful. You’d never see a Hasid in shorts.”

My curiosity piqued. What would she look like? Our hero checked his watch. We checked ours.

At last his pretty sweetheart rushed into his arms. They laughed. They cried. They kissed.

“How romantic.” I sighed. “Dontcha just love a happy ending?”

“Yeah. Now what do we do for the next eleven hours?”

Older moms cautioned me about wishing my babies’ lives away.

“Rock them. Enjoy every moment.”

Caught up in colic, teething, followed by the ‘terrible two’s,’ their words of wisdom fell on deaf and weary ears.

As my boys grew, they bickered and teased. The days seemed to plod at a glacial pace.

Now they’re grown men, living their lives far away.

Remember Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver? I dreamed I would one day marry the perfect man. We’d live in a charming house with a flower garden and a white picket fence. Our children would be well-behaved and talented.

Nearly fifty years and three sons later, I reflect. Did I marry Ward Cleaver? Nope. Nor did he marry June. Real life turned out to be a messy proposition. There were good times and not-so-good times. One idyll after another teetered and fell.

*My husband’s brother, Jerry, died in a car accident when he was in the Air Force, stationed in Turkey in 1974. He was one of the funniest, sharpest people I have ever known.

TOYS, GAMES, AND YO-YO’S

My Chatty Cathy doll said eleven different things, ranging from “Let’s play house” to “I love you.” Her voice sounded just like Talking Tina of “I’m going to kill you” Twilight Zone Fame. No surprise. Voice actress June Foray spoke for both of them.

However, of all the toys I lost or broke, only one stood up to years of joyful wear and tear.

I owe it to inventor André Cassagnes, a baker’s son whose allergy to flour caused him to seek employment as an electrician. His creation would go on to become the Etch-A-Sketch.

I still play with it.

A few of my high school class mates and I friended each other on Facebook. One day someone suggested we all meet at a local café for lunch. I hedged. Why would they invite me? We never hung in the same social circles. With great apprehension, I went.

The visit wasn’t what I expected. As teenagers we all worried about what everyone else thought of us. Today we’re simply women of a certain age with more in common than not—adult children, grandchildren and imminent retirement.

We’ve left high school and its emotional baggage four decades behind us. Who do we need to impress?
