Gazing out the window, she pondered the studio executive’s suggestion. “Fredi, you could easily pass for French and become a Hollywood star.”

“What happens if I’m found out?”

Despite her green eyes and pale skin, Fredi Washington remained true to her heritage. Was it her fault ignorant white audiences swallowed the notion of black inferiority hook, line and stinker?

Black actors should not have to stoop to stereotypical portrayals of shuffling servants. Clenching her teeth, Fredi folded her arms.

Turn her back? Pass?

“No. I’m a mighty proud gal. Why should I have to pass for anything but an artist?”

As my life has taken some spins and dives of late, my muse didn’t seem to want to come up with anything new. This week, January 27, 2023, marks the 78th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. I feel it’s more important than ever to post a reminder with antisemitism and racist hatred on the rise. How can intelligent people become animals and beasts? The following is a snippet of an interview I had the honor of doing with survivor Sonia Warshawski, fondly known as “Big Sonia” seven years ago.

THE INTERVIEW

“For I’m gon’ tell you,” says Sonia, a colorful and imposing presence at 4 feet 8 inches tall. “It happened so slowly. Not all at once.

“The soldiers line up rabbis in the street and made us watch them rip out their beards by the roots. Then they shot them.

“I’ll never forget. In front of me they slaughter babies. I’ll never forgive.

“Silence kills.” Her intense brown eyes dig trenches in my heart. “I tell you what is not in history books. As long as God gives me power, I will speak for them.”

This interviewer will never forget.

“You didn’t know me.” She whines.

Did she know me? No way. She was out of my league.

And now she expects me to pity Ms Pretty Popular Prom Queen?

No way.

THE GREAT MISSISSIPPI FLOOD OF 1927

“I’m so glad the waters are finally receding.” Myrtle smoothed her blonde hair with one hand while sipping her lemonade. “It’s been an awful year, hasn’t it?”

Geraldine crunched an ice chip, savoring the cold on her tongue. “Dreadful. Just dreadful.”

“Daddy says he’s not sure how we will ever recover our losses.” Tears trickled from Myrtle’s blue eyes. “Momma’s carpets were washed away, Grandma’s china shattered and my best frocks are simply ruined.”

“Bless your heart. Why, I hear tell all our farmhands went north. Can you believe those selfish darkies deserted us in our hour of need?”

HATE IS TOO GREAT A BURDEN

“Love that forgives is our theme,” said Carole.

Addie, tall for fourteen, Denise, the dress-up princess, Cynthia, and Carole, the Girl Scout who had earned every known badge, prepared for the youth service. I envied them as they tied each other’s sashes. I was only four, too young to participate.

Cynthia’s dark eyes sparkled. “How many times should we forgive?”

Her smile illuminating the Birmingham church basement, Addie, winked at me. “Seventy times seven.”

Moments later, the Grand Dragon spewed fire and brimstone. Time halted at 10:22 that September Sunday morning in 1963. Eternity claimed four angels.

I cannot forgive.
