IT’S WINE O’CLOCK

Published June 25, 2018 by rochellewisoff

This past Saturday, the town ofย Blue Springs, Missouri, hosted the annual event known as “Corks & Canvas.” Artists, musicians and wine vendors set up their tents up and down the street and hawk their wares.ย

After a month of August weather in May and June, the heatwave broke and we were grateful for cool morning breezes and clouds. Although sunshine prevailed as the day progressed, it was still cooler than the past few weeks have been.

This is our second year to participate. When I say “our” I include my husband Jan who takes charge of the heavy lifting and set up. I don’t know what I’d do without my Chief. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (You should hear his sales pitches for my art and books. Makes me want to buy them.) Things went smoother with set up this year since it was no longer our first rodeo. Last year we spent months shopping for display supplies such as tent, tables and walls. This year the only thing I needed to do ahead of time was paint, frame and have a few more prints made.

Although it seems that fewer people showed up this year, it was an enjoyable time, nonetheless. A few friends I hadn’t seen for a while showed up to visit and lend their support. Did I think to take pictures of them?

One thing I appreciate about signings is the way my books, informed by my Eastern European family, often inspire others to share their histories with me. No exceptions here. I sold out of PLEASE SAY KADDISH FOR ME and sold a few of the sequels FROM SILT AND ASHES and AS ONE MUST ONE CAN.ย

The wine glass note cards were also a hit. Many thanks to Alexis at Print Graphics for her diligence to details.ย

We received an invitation to participate in another wine fest in September in Independence, Missouri. It looks promising. I’d better order more books and do a few more wineglass paintings.ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

Note to self: Bring a change of shoes next time.

Yes the bowl in the photo is the bowl in my story. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Originally it was part of a three-piece set. My dad was one of three children. My grandparents gave each of them a piece when they married. Personally I think my parents got the best of the set. It has been a source of fascination since I can remember. And, yes, I do count backwards, alternating Spanish and Hebrewย  when I swim laps. (Sensenta y seis -66, sheshim v’hamesh -65, sesenta y cuatro – 64, sheshim v’sh’losh – 63 and so on and so on and scooby dooby do ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) It helps me stay focused. The pool at our fitness center is 25 ft in length. 66 lengths equals a mile.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

Published May 6, 2018 by rochellewisoff

Happy Cinco de Mayo! This week, quite fittingly, Pegman takes us to Mexico. Participants are invited to poke around the resort village (and ancient Mayan stomping grounds) of Tulum. Youโ€™ll find both streetview and photospheres to inspire you at thisย location.

Your mission is to write a 150-word story-poem-essay inspired by the location. Feel free to wander around and find your own view to use in your post.

Once your piece is polished, you can share it with others using the linkup below. Reading and commenting on othersโ€™ work is part of the fun!

The photo I chose is from the “Pegman Buffet” but my story takes place in Chiapas, Mexico, a few miles inland from Tulum. The Mayans have always fascinated me. So many mysteries surrounding them.ย ย

Thanks as always to Karenย and Josh for hosting this globe trotting challenge.ย

SUITABLE FOR FRAMING

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  I spent my twelfth summer with my aunt and uncle in Monticello, NY.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Uncle Harold won my heart, not just because he showered me with attention and frozen custard, but because he was an artist. While he never achieved national acclaim, he did win a few awards in local shows for his impressionistic works.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  I cherish memories of painting with him on the patio.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  โ€œA masterpiece,โ€ he proclaimed my robin watercolor.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Today, as I put the finishing touches on my latest opus, I almost hear Uncle Harold say, โ€œGood job! Letโ€™s go for a frozen custard. Donโ€™t tell Aunt Lu.โ€ย

A Lovely Interview

Published November 14, 2017 by rochellewisoff

I will make this blog short and, hopefully, sweet.ย

Last week I had the unexpected pleasure of interviewing with Dr. Paul Reeves on Impact USA out of Detroit. Click on his name under the photo to learn more.ย

I say unexpected because it all came about quickly and seemingly out of nowhere.ย

I was chatting in a Facebook private message with friend Caroline Giammancoย , author of “The Boonie Hat Bandit” and “Guilty Hearts” who asked if I would be interested in doing an interview. If so she could get me in touch with Deborah Ratliff who gathers info for Dr. Paul. (Are you with me?) I emailed my particulars to Deborah and within hours I received an email from Dr. Paul. I’ll stop there since my head’s spinning just writing it.ย

Here I am with Caroline in Chicago May before last.

Without further adieu, here’s the interview if you have 30 minutes to spare. For those of you in Friday Fictioneers, you’ll note that the subject came up more than once. Perhaps we’ll see Dr. Paul in our midst as a Fictioneer in the not too distant future.ย

Once more another excerpt from my trilogy as I prepare the coffee table companion book, A STONE FOR THE JOURNEY. Designed for those who like art and very short stories. ๐Ÿ˜‰ This is an excerpt from the third in the series, AS ONE MUST, ONE CAN. A little background for those unfamiliar. The menorah in the story is a ‘character’ of sorts. Crafted by Yussel’s father, it has survived the pogroms and the long journey to America.

October’s End

Published October 31, 2017 by rochellewisoff

The weekend, beginning with Thursday, the 26th wasย  busy one. It began with an interview with Jim Christina and Russ Avison on The Writers Block. Some will remember that I had the joy of going out to California to interview in the studio with them last November. The opportunity just didn’t present itself this year so we muddle through via telephone. Nonetheless, I had a great time.ย

Here is the link with Jim’s generous intro: ๐Ÿ˜€

Russ and I had a great conversation with author and artist Rochelle Wisoff Fields last evening. An informed writer and unique historian of early 1900’s Russia and the US. Giver her books a read! Here is the podcast address:ย http://latalkradio.com/content/writer-102617%20#audio_playย

Findingย  Cure Through Literacy

Friday morning we hit the road at 5:00 AM to make the long drive to Texarkana for the 8th Annual Gathering of Authors, a charity event and book signing. The festivities were kicked off withย  benefit banquet. All proceeds were to go to St. Jude’s Hospital.ย

I made some new friends and valuable connections.ย  Not to mention it was nice to just get away for a couple of days with my hubby.ย

Afterward went to spend the rest of the weekend with gracious hosts Tom and Frances Mosby in Dover AR.ย  Since Jan hadn’t heard my interview and we had a long drive we listened to it. Now he knows that “big men walk in fear of me.” (Thanks, Russ.)ย

Frances and I have known each other since kindergarten so we can always find things to talk about. Yes, we still chatter like a couple of school girls. I’m glad that the guys get along so well, too.ย

Below are a few photos from the weekend for your viewing pleasure. ๐Ÿ˜‰

As we meandered down our street toward home, our neighbor Bud who we’d asked to take in our mail, stopped us to tell us there was a serious problem. With my heart in my mouth, I followed Bud and Jan into their house. Bud’s wife, Cindi met us at the door with wine and said, “You won’t want to be our friends anymore. I washed your mail.”ย

Have you ever seen a stack of mail that has been trough wash, rinse and spin? Most of it was recognizable. Just mush around the edges. Once we ascertained that there was nothing of any consequence, we toasted our friendship with laughter and wine.ย

Thank you, Bud and Cindi Turner for being such good friends!

This is a scene from AS ONE MUST, ONE CAN, the third in my Havah Cohen Gitterman trilogy. By the third book, the characters have survived the hardships of Eastern European persecution. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  Protracted memories riddled Shayndel. โ€œBayla never spoke againโ€”until the morning sheโ€ฆshe climbed the tree in the yard to the highest branch. Naked. Great with child.
