WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – WAYWARD

Published May 2, 2021 by rochellewisoff

A word prompt to get your creativity flowing this weekend.  How you use the prompt is up to you.  Write a piece of flash fiction, a poem, a chapter for your novel…anything you like.  Or take the challenge below – there are no prizes – it’s not a competition but rather a fun writing exercise.  If you want to share what you come up with, please leave a link to it in Sammi’s Comment Section.

FUTURE AUTHOR

Mrs. Ervine’s glaring stare bores through me. “What is the capital of Texas?”

My nine-year-old heart crashes against my ribcage. “T?”

“Not funny.” The teacher leans into my face. “If you’d been paying attention, you’d know it’s Austin. How many times do I have to tell…?

I knew it would one day catch up with me. Daydreaming. Wayward thoughts cavorting in space, ever colliding…

“Miss Wisoff, what did I just say?”

“Could you repeat it, Mrs. Ervine?”

The daydreamer author at nine.

THE GREAT MISSISSIPPI FLOOD OF 1927

“I’m so glad the waters are finally receding.” Myrtle smoothed her blonde hair with one hand while sipping her lemonade. “It’s been an awful year, hasn’t it?”

Geraldine crunched an ice chip, savoring the cold on her tongue. “Dreadful. Just dreadful.”

“Daddy says he’s not sure how we will ever recover our losses.” Tears trickled from Myrtle’s blue eyes. “Momma’s carpets were washed away, Grandma’s china shattered and my best frocks are simply ruined.”

“Bless your heart. Why, I hear tell all our farmhands went north. Can you believe those selfish darkies deserted us in our hour of need?”

Block Editor – My Way

Published April 25, 2021 by rochellewisoff

Many thanks to Gabi for sharing this with the rest of us WP Luddites to take the pain out of the change. I’ve fought it for a couple of years. But I’m determined to get the hang of it. Please click on the link at the bottom to read more.

Through several comments I’ve learned that I’m not the only one in the Friday Fictioneers group who has problems with the block editor. Since that one is the future and Classic won’t likely be functional by next year, I’ve collected a few easy tips and tricks how I made my peace with the block editor. Mind you, I still struggle with some of the features. It is not intuitive and really needs getting used to. I am getting better but it still does things I don’t want it to do. Luckily, there is the undo arrow button.

What is most confusing to me is the fact that you never see all the options in one place, the menus constantly change depending on the type of edit you want to do: post, block, text, image, grid etc.. But it is all there. Somewhere…

This will be image-heavy. Don’t open the full…

It’s zero-dark-thirty in the blessed AM

She’s awake and restless,

Her mind ablaze with random ideas.

Nightlife?

Fuhgettaboutit!

So I’m trying Block Editor this morning. Some things don’t work the way I want them to. I’ve tried aligning things to the center and they don’t. Happy early morning to y’all. Shalom, Rochelle

So I’m trying this with Block Editor. There are some features I like and some I really DON’T! At any rate, I’ve a lot to learn. So having said that, I’ll say Shalom and Good morning! Rochelle

YOUTH HAS NO AGE

A cool breeze ruffled Elise’s hair. She hugged herself to stave off the night’s chill. Calliope music and the cloying scent of fairy floss did nothing to lift her spirits.

She slipped her brand-new Medicare card from her purse and scowled at it.

Ben wrapped his arms around her. Colored lights limned his silver-white hair and twinkled in his mischievous hazel eyes. “It’s only a number, honey.”

“Yeah. A really big number.”

“Pfft. Come on, Birthday Girl, let’s go for a whirl on the Ferris wheel.”

She stood on tiptoe and kissed his smile. “You know I’m afraid of heights.”

Isn’t it uncanny? This is one prompt I can seem to resist. Thanks, Sammi. 😉 I waxed sentimental with this one.

MYSTERY OF MOTHERHOOD

Isn’t it uncanny

How, in a moment, a tiny bean

Turned my world right-side-up

When he

Circled his hand

Around my finger?

And nearly half a century later

He still maintains a firm grip

On my heart and soul.

AGENT 3844

Heart pounding, Virginia Hall caught her breath and massaged her aching hip. “That was a close call. Cuthbert, you’re always causing trouble.”

“You’ve named your wooden leg?” Virginia’s fellow agent, Armand, found a table in a darkened tavern. “Here. Rest fast.”

She forced a smile. “I was sure the Gestapo recognized me from the poster.”

“The artist certainly captured your likeness. But your disguise is good.”

“Perhaps not good enough.”

The tavern keeper brought two glasses of wine.

“It is my honor to serve with you.” Armand raised his glass. “To the lady who limps. Most dangerous of Allied spies.”

WEEKEND WRITING PROMPT – FORAGE

DUMPSTER DIVING

I forage for a morsel to fill my void.

Finding an inviting container labeled applesauce,

I open it, anticipating its sweetness,

Only to be repulsed by a thick layer of green fuzz.

My disappointed stomach rumbles.

Next, I find a sliver of stale pizza.

It tastes like cardboard.

What do I care?

I’m starving.

The stench of rotted vegetables overpowers me.

How did I sink to this level of despair?

I must rise above it.

Today.

Yes!

Today I’ll clean this refrigerator.

I promise it’s not that bad. 😉

GREASEPAINT AND KIMCHEE

“Hey kid.”

Philip stood beside his car, waiting for his sweetheart Anna May Wong. He startled to see movie idol Douglas Fairbanks scrutinizing him. “Me?”

“Yeah, you. You have presence.”

The actor insisted the boy make a screen test.

Still in makeup, heart racing, Philip took a contract home. Instead of the accolades he hoped for, his mother flew into a rage.

She tore the papers to shreds. “No son of mine is getting mixed up with those awful people.”

Two-hundred movies and television shows later, Korean-American actor Philip Ahn laughed. “I’ll never forget. She grounded me for three days.”

Weekend Writing Prompt – Absurd

Published April 4, 2021 by rochellewisoff

INNER CHILD

Blind contour drawing. How absurd does that sound? I never cared for the exercise in school and I’m not sure how I feel about it now. The drawing is done in one continuous line without looking.

Recently I did one at a workshop. The instructor asked how I felt about it.

“Vulnerable,” I said. “Like a child.”

“Mission accomplished,” she replied.

Here’s the one I did in the workshop this past Wednesday.

Below is what I did this morning. The instructor suggested I try more contour drawings and add watercolors to them. It is kind of a fun exercise…not sure how I feel about it as an artform. 😉
